hi guys, i am thinking of making a small server pc to remotely log into and compile stuff on :) i want it to be:
1) cheap
2) low power consumption
3) small
4) quiet - i.e. 1 fan on cpu and 1 on psu!

can anyone recommend a processor and a case for such a machine?

was thinking of putting linux on it and a 100gb drive in it (or similar - maybe a raid 1)

thanks

daven

You might be better looking for an older machine rather than buying new bits if that's all it's going to do. I'm considering the same.

There was something perfect on there a while ago, wish I'd bought it. Was a Compaq or something, running about a 1GHz, but with a transformer in the wire, meaning no fan in the PSU.

Anybody any idea what I'm talking about?

What about an old Dell Optilex?? They are small and pritty quiet and can be picked up pritty cheap off the bay, then just stick a bigger HDD in.

Only broblem is i dont think they will have SATA connections on the mobo but not sure, could always buy a pci card though?

I bought a HP e-pc 42 from ebay 2 years ago for £120, P4 1.6ghz, 768mb SDRAM, 160GB hard disk, DVD-RW optical drive, external power supply like u get for laptop

running 24/7 for file/print server and download box (bit torrent/usenet) with licenced XP Pro, RDC in whenever i'm outside, very happy :)

see how small!!

oh....100% silent :)

There's a better spec, but it comes without a PSU and apparently they're really hard to get hold of. Does yours have the dual voltage or could I just get a laptop PSU for it?

Just found someone selling them... £90!
