Looking to get a gamepad to play from the sofa, PC attached to the TV, and probably going to get the x360 pad as by all accounts its the best to get. Am i right in assuming i can get any pad and it will work or is there a specific PC version?

A wired pad will work off the bat on vista and 7. A wireless pad needs a PC specific receiver. A wireless pad with play and charge kit won't work either.

If you get a wireless controller and the wireless receiver I think you still need a play and charge kit for the controller to install it's drivers. That's how I did mine.

Any Wired MS Xbox pad will work on Windows 7 by just plugging it in. Some licensed third party controllers may require you to install the driver pack from MS (MadCatz stuff etc).

If you still have problems after installing the latest driver pack just go through Window Device Manager and force install the Xbox pad driver onto the controller with issues. (Required for some early MadCatz fightsticks)

Nope.

Nope, just the controller and receiver.

This.

The play and charge carries no data what-so-ever. You'll install the drivers when you plug the wireless receiver in.

I would suggest a play and charge kit though, dead handy. I also got one of them devices that charges 2 batteries at a time, they charge really really quick. Long as you get official battery packs, the cheap ones on ebay never last.

When I did it nothing happened when I tried to bind the controller to the receiver. I followed all of the instructions but windows wouldn't recognize the controller. The retailer sent me some instructions that said if for some reason the drivers were not being installed plug the controller into the pc using the play and charge kit. I did and then the drivers proceeded to be installed.

I found the same instructions here

Edit: Forgot to mention, the receiver I bought was from ebay, probably a knock off, but other than the installation problems it works great. This doesn't change the fact that the only way windows would install the drivers was when Iugged in the play and charge kit.

I got a receiver from ebay, the drivers that came with it would not install and windows would not automatically install.

All I did was choose the default windows driver by the "let me pick from a list" button and it worked fine. I use Hybrio batteries in mine.

Buy a Wireless xBox 360 controller for PC for about £30, will buy you a controller and wireless receiver (essential), can also buy a USB wired one if feeling cheap.
