A strategy game with realistic units?

OK, if you're not bothered about graphics and don't mind the main focus being on naval warfare (ultra realistic units etc.), I'd say you couldn't do better than 'Harpoon 4'.

It's getting on, but that doesn't matter, it's absolutely timeless, and the unit database involved is staggering. The action is strategic and tactical map only with the icons responding to your input.

Best read up a few reviews, because this is hardcore. Completele engrossing, miles ahead of the Total War or Europa Universalis series.

Too involved for today's strategy games.

Empire total war - with the TROM Mod installed

The Rights Of Man MOD is a very detailed update on ETW that adds much need realism into unit behaviours, weapons etc.

I only use it on MP but apparently for the campaign mode (SP) it is also very good with more accurate historic changes.

The MP battles using the TROM mod are epic in proportion to vanilla ETW!

If pretty graphics aren't an issue then get yourself the demo for Hearts of Iron 3. It has a serious learning curve but is meant to be incredible when you get things moving.

The developers have just released patch 1.3 which is meant to have bought in a large number of improvments. Worth a look in my opinion.

Sudden Strike series? Damn that was a difficult game, keeping all your units supplied etc. in an RTS environment.

EPIC GAMES.

Although I was so paranoid Rommel would have given up in disgust at my tactics.

Carrot and ÚBER HAMMER OF DOOM HOVERING ABOVE IT was a good one if I had some artillery handy on shortcuts while I scouted.

Commando raids with a jeep packed with snipers/machine gunners VS enemy artillery is another one.

Watching those ****ing german AT tanks which murder my allied tanks go past on patrol using long vision units then rushing in with some light tanks to blow their treads off then pound them to death from behind as they sit immobile, unable to turn round and trash my armour.

My favourite despite the fact it's very awkward to set up against something tasty is the Churchill Crocodile tank. How can a flamethrowing tank NOT be epic.

Good times.

Only downside is that it encourages defensive play or paranoid use of saved games.

You get units to start with and you may or may not have nothing else to complete the mission on. Not easy to run away when attacked so if you move forward into a situation where their firepower beats yours... you get served a helping of fail and crawl back to your last saved game to find an easier way through.
