Hi all,

My dad turns 60 this year (1st March) and i want to get him a nice watch for his birthday.

Unfortunatly i cant spend the £1000+ i would like to get him a nice Tag Formula 1 watch as my wife would kill me and if its too valuable he would wear the thing , so i have been set a limit of £150, still a lot too us a we normally stick to a limit of £30 for bithdays.

He isnt a man of many hobbys, he loved his job as a train driver (now medically retired office based staff) and his only strong interests are Formula 1 and spending time with his grankids, he also likes the odd TV show (QI, True Blood) but thats just like everyone i suppose.

I'm looking at F1 watches at the moment as we went to silverstone a few years ago and they has some very nice watches but were around the £300 mark at the stalls.

The one i am looking at is currently http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B001FRW3PW/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new but i have never seen a Jacques Lemans watch but read they did produce the official F1 watches until a year or so ago.

any idea guys? i know here £150 is a tiny budget for a watch but if i dont set one it can get silly.

Cheers for any help

GTanny.

Something like this.

Nite MX10 or Poljot Strella, both really nice watches.

Problem is, the price seems to have doubled since I last looked.

Spending 1k on a watch is silly anyway.

Rotary do some nice looking watches under budget.

If you really want to follow the F1 theme, buy him a ticket to silverstone or something.

The Skagen mention above, I have a variant of that, love it. It's extremely light weight, barely notice it's on etc and seems to have decent build quality.

He is your father, his sperm brought you into this world, and then he raised you... I wouldn't listen to the wife, buy him something timeless.

Skagens are good for the price. Their glass is a weak point and can be easily smashed. I have one and it's very nice, forget which one though :p

i disagree, i would spend 1k on a watch for him but i know at that price he wouldnt wear it due to the value and he would be annoyed i spent so much when it could go towards my daughters.

also we did silverstone a few years ago, he retires in 2-3 years and is planning to do a few european races with his pension lump sum.

edit: cheers for the options so far, i take it there isnt much love for the F1 watches in terms of a quality watch :)

so far really like the Skagen, the Seagul 1963 and the Poljot Strela but that ones out of budget it seems.

he tends to prefer a leather strap (should have added that in the OP really... sorry) but the Skagen strap may be suitable as its not links

get him a vintage omega for about £150-200 off the bay.

they seem very pricy but some are nice, you did give me idea as i am looking into the idea of getting him a watch from 1954 but that didnt last long as the choice is obviously very limited and most start around £900 :(

Because something that costs 10x less does the same job?!
The same basic function, but so do many things in life. People like better than basic because it gives warm feelings and satisfaction, which itself makes it different.

There does become a point where it's more money than sense.

Expensive watches are just bought and intended to be ornaments, albeit unconsciously for most.
