I'd guess it's written using the "simple" vocabulary, or whatever it's called, which is about 3,000 words. Most of us have a working vocabulary of 8-10,000 words, and some of us much more. For reference, both The Sun and The Good News Bible are written to a similar target.

I had the version from 1997. I remember doing an essay on the Renaissance, about 5 of us handed in exact copies of the text from Encarta, haha
