A worried raptor user

Hello,

I am having a terrible noise problem with my WD 36GB Raptor. I have had it since christmas and have had no problems it was been superb but earlier tonight i thought a earthquake had come upon Bristol. The raptor was making the noise as if your trying to change gear in your car but without the clutch in. I have a sound recording off it:

It has been virtually silent since today. I thought it could have been a wire hitting a fan but i checked and its not - its definately the raptor.

What shall i do? I have transfered important files straight away out of panic because i know data loss is quite likely with WD?

I have a hitachi 7TK250 coming tomorrow, is this hd any good? Hope so. The raptor is under 5 years warranty.

Any ideas?

By the sounds of it, its on its way to the great place in the sky. All you can do tbh, is backup everything you can. If it is dying, there is nothing you can do to fix it. When it does go, is it still in waranty, as you will be able to get a new one if it is. If not, you can pick them up on the members market for £40-£50. Unlucky though mate.

Edit; I really should read the whole post. With it being under warranty you should be alright. Get it replaced, stick windows on it and keep the Hitatchi for programs/games/files etc.

Thanks very much for the quick reply/advice and thank you for the link.

That will be the last time i buy a Raptor thats for sure :| Such a shame. I am lucky to be able to save my files though, so i have to be thankful for that.

It doesn't have to be a shame!!! You do realise that hard drive failures WILL happen with ALL drives - its just a matter of time!!

If you stop buying drives from manufacturers who's drives have failed on you - or who's drives have "worried" you that they could be about to fail - then you'll very quickly run out of drives that you can buy.

I've been lucky enough to have never had adrive fail on me - but I accept that I've been pretty lucky. Personally unless I had the same type of drive fail more than once in a short period of time - then I wouldn't think twice about getting another drive from that manufacturer.

DONT rule out a hard drive based on ONE failure - there are thousands upon thousands of drives sold by every manufacturer every year - of course there will be an unlucky few who get "duff" drives from any of them!! Its just pure bad luck, nothing more!!

Im not just ruling out the raptor because of the failure my friend, no, you see i am not a great fan of the raptors - the main reason is the value for money. I dont see the point in paying extra ££ for little improvment - apart from boot up, but how often do you boot up your PC? once/twice a day? Dont get me wrong they are good for some things but i wish i never bought one TBH.
