I think I agree, that's a bit OTT.

He's made a mistake, a mistake that many others have made and many will make in the future, that's all. Unfortunately the mistake doesn't excuse him from having to pay the penalty charge, but it's still only a mistake. We all make mistakes.
 
You are going to have to pay I'm afraid. Don't they halve it if you pay within 14 days? Takes the sting out a little.

Travelling from the south I personally didn't think that the signage was good enough. Massive 'C's on the road and a sign saying "Dart charge, look us up online" isn't enough information for those that don't know about the online toll system IMO.
 
What more information do you want?

The big C is a sign you'll find in the highway code regarding charging zones, so that alone warns you that you're about to enter a chargeable area.

They then go further and offer information about how to find more details of that specific zone.

Anyone with an ounce of sense would surely see that big C, see about dart charge and then look it up later. Simple.
 
I apologise for the sarcasm, but when I took my test the ability to read signs was included. Has something changed?
 
I've noticed that people moaning about paying the fine on Twitter are being allowed to just pay the fee for the crossing on a first offence. You could give that a go.

Don't bother emailing them though, the people who deal with that are a pack of cheats. I had a courtesy car registered to my normal account, car went back and I took it off the account. 2 weeks later I got charged for 2 crossings as for whatever reason the car was still attached to my account. I emailed them my receipt for the car showing that there was no way I was in charge of it when the crossing happened but they didn't want to know. It was only something like £3.50 but I'm still angry about it even now :p

Have you tried phoning them as on some occasions they have honored the £2.50 fee with a small admin charge.

he has a point... All these signs you saw, yet didnt see, and you still didnt pay the toll. Playing dumb doesn't work.

Also, you drove all the way from the A12 to the bridge, before noticing you was going the WRONG way? So that's 3 junctions (A127, A13 and A1306) you could have got off from to turn around. Madness.

I kind of see the point though - I'm searching my memory, but after watching that video - by the time blue board with confusing (C) congestion (rather than Toll) sign is displayed on the side of the road, there is no further turn to escape it. The only exit is for controllers in booths. It becomes entrapment?
