Advice would be appreciated on this -

Firstly would changing my 4000 to an opty 165 or 170 be worth it? Ive got my 4000 clocked at over 3 ghz stable but I encode quite a bit of video and audio so would like to go duel core without shelling out for a new rig.

Secondly if it is worth changing, are they all good overclocker's? I know some steppings will be better than other's but Im not looking to get stupid overclocks from them, just a nice speed increase will do.

I do have access to either a 165 or 170 for a quite reasonable price which is the reason Im asking.

Thanks in advance..!!

i'd say its worth it, especially if you know what stepping you can get in advance, certain 165/170 steppings are 2.8ghz+ and TBH even if you get a poor/average one you should still get 2.4-2.5ghz atleast :)

I went from a A4000 @ 3.1ghz to a Opteron 165 @ 2.94ghz, both using a Arctic cooler 64 pro, I find multitasking slightly faster, its very hard to notice speed improvement at this speed during normal desktop stuff, encoding is much faster and gaming is more smoother esp games which make use of 2 cores.

I have bought 2 Opty 165's in the last month. Both were CCBBE stepping with one being wk 0615 and the other 0616. The 1st does 2.9GHz on stock volts and other did 2.8 at stock. I see no real point in going for a 170 or 175 because A64's work very well with dividers.

Im back in London on Friday, the whole day, Ill come and collect and hand you a xmas bonus :)

One is used in my Shuttle and the other was put into a system I built for my brother last week.

If you are desperate for a good Opty 165 (which OcUK no longer stock), perform a search on a few well known price comparission sites and I am sure my supplier will pop up. They currently show 40 odd in stock. Most, if not all of recent Opty's from them have reached 2.8GHz and beyond.
