Hi, I have no interest in slightly lower temps and i'm interested in buying a A64 opteron off someone who has removed the IHS, I was wondering how do I put this back on? what do I do exactly to the word?

What you need is some silicone sealant *I think*. First of all put some TIM on the core, then put a line round the chip where the IHS comes into contact with it. Pop the IHS on top then put something heavy on top of the IHS until sealant sets. It's best to do this with the chip in a socket so the pins don't get damaged.

I haven't done this myself but I've heard of someone else do it and I think it was that silicone sealant they used (like builders use).

I've already got a venice at 2.7ghz, dont think i'll bother not worth the trouble by the looks of it, knowing my luck i'll probably kill the chip.

Yes thats the exact way to do it. You want to use Silicon Rubber which can be purchased from Local Electrical store etc.

Make sure you have the weight, i ued a trophy dead level. AS5 on the Core, leave a air gap with the silicon like AMD have the indent. Give a few hrs to dry and its done. Ive done a few and all been ok altho not as good as the IHS OFF. ;)

do you need special coolers to run with the IHS off or will a standard cooler like a gigabyte g-power, AC freezer 64pro, scythe ninja etc work fine?

You need a cooler that screws into the motherboard as removing the IHS lowers the top of the CPU by a few mm so heatsinks that clamp onto the standard bracket (like the stock cooler) won't work

If it uses the standard A64 retention socket on the motherboard then no, not without modification to the clips. If the HS uses it's own pillar type mount (TT Big Typhoon etc) then you shouldn't have any problems.

Other thing to note, even if you mod the clips to apply the correct level of pressure on the core, you run an increased risk of chipping the core because of the way it clips on one side first.
