my dad wants a new car and he is going to treat himself to one of these cars.

he will get a diesel, and long wheel base version.
So its:
Audi A8 3.0TDI LWB
Mercedes S Class 320CDI LWB
Jaguar 2.7TDVi LWB
7 Series 730d LWB

my dad prefers the jag, but i think the audi, merc and bmw have much more road presence (sp). my favourite is probably the Audi A8 as it is just amazing.

but what would you lot recommened my dad to get?

o and there is also the lexus LS but i dont think that can compete

Thanks

I think the Lexus would certainly compete with your other choices, it just doesn't have the correct badge.
If your dad likes the Jag, it may be pretty hard to convince him to try your other (good) choices, I find that if someone already has a preference for a particualr make, then it's hard to change their mind.

All I would suggest is that you test drive everything that fits the bill, only then can you make an informed decision, not one based on looks and badge alone.

about the lexus, i'm sure its an excellent car but it only comes in one engine size. which is a 4 litre petrol so thats the only problem.

lol id try and persuade my dad to get a phaeton as no one owns them but apparantly the running costs are to high so might not work out better

I'd go for the new S Class. All the others have been around for a few years now, the S Class is new out and will be cutting edge in terms of design and technology.

The Audi would be a close second on the grounds of understated class, the 7 Series is ugly, and the Jag does nothing for me - sort of car I could see my Grandfather in.

Why the LWB? I always thought they were bought for people that will mostly be chauffeured around. If that's the case, just see which is the nicest ride and buy that :)

If it were me then I'd probably go S Class, Audi, Jag.

Audi +ve rarity value, build -ve looks like any other Audi

Mercedes +ve lots of technology -ve looks like any other Merc, suffers from rich ****** syndrome

Jaguar +ve rarity value, British 'character' -ve suspect build quality perceptions

BMW +ve lots of technology -ve looks like any other BMW, other drivers dislike you

Personally I would get the Audi, despite being a long time Jaguar fanboy.

I'd only go for the Jag if it was the XJR, which is what I want next. The do plummet in value though, which is why I can afford one next. Not sure how the others fair.

My uncle has been driving the new S class for the last six months and he reckons it's the best thing he's driven in a while. It's jut the little things like reducing the tolerences between doors and panels to 3mm from 5mm to reduce wind noise that make it a phenominal car.

If your dad prefers the jag then let him go for the jag. Its a lot of money afterall and being your dads car hardly matters to yourself.

I'd personally go for the Jag. It had a far nicer, warmer and spacious interior than the others. It is also the best looking out of the selection IMO

I've only sat in them though so I'd definitely agree with the earlier poster that said to test drive them all first

he needs help to choose his car.
he likes all the cars but he is leaning to the jag, im just showing him his options avaiable

he will make the final decision, but at least he knows which one will suit him better

I'd go with the Audi A8. In fact I did, but not a stinky diesel.

If I was buying a new car again today it would be a hard choice between an A8 and an S-Class.

Actually thinking about chopping the 4.2 in against a 6.0 W12 next month.

I'd go for the Jag. Hands down, has a character, charm and sense of ocassion that none of the other cars can match. You can't beat an XJ interior.

It's the cheapest and will use the least fuel (I assume thats why he wants the diesel). 0-60 takes 7.9 seconds whereas the others vary between 7.4 and 7.8, so similar but no quicker.

Apart from the Jag, i'd be tempted by the S-class if you're buying brand new, as that was updated in 2006.

At the end of the day, none of them are bad cars. But i'll happily stake my claim on the Jag :)

There's a Jeremy Clarkson review of the LWB XJ6 and he was very complimentary about it iirc.

Would it be a new one? As they only make the 6.0 W12 in LWB form now :(

I've been in them all and would go with the A8 and then the Jag.

If brand new, nothing rocks more than the new S-Class in Black. If it's the old one, nothign looks more last year.
