It's ages since I've overclocked and I now have this mobo /CPU with 4 X 512 Corsair XMS 3200 and I've forgotten the basics.

Just to get be started what should I be aiming for in terms of a moderate overclock. HTT,FSB, Multiplier etc. Is the max on this board still 1000 ,ie HTT 4 X 250 like my old MSI Neo2 platinum ?
Am I right in thinking the rated speed on this CPU is 2200 Hz.

Alo-Ha.

I used to have a 3700SD on the same Board and it clocked very well. But if you using 4x 512 dimms you will run into problems very, very quickly! I have found that if your OCing it just doesn't happen, or it seriously hinders performance, so if you are looking at upgrading. Possibly look at the 2gig kits. Sorry to tell ya that buddy but I used to have 4x 512 dimms of OCZ platinum PC4800 and it just didn't want to know! Eesh.

You are right about the FSB of being about 1000mhz. Try not to exceed that 'cos its not too stable above 1000.

As for a clocking guide Click here. I always refer people to this guide but it is very consise and even if your a OCing noob or a OC master, you can always refer to this guide. So hopefully it will refresh your memory.

And yes, your stock speed for that CPU is 2.2ghz (200 HTT with a multi on the CPU of 11, hence 2200).

Agent

I have an A8N Premium and a 3700 SD and it clocks very well with the board. Im currently running mine at 2.8GHz (255x11 with a 333 memory divider). Thats on stock volts and cooling too.

As matey said, you will probably encounter problems when running 4 sticks of RAM.

Ok initially I'll give it a go with my 4X512's. If as you say it's gonna be a problem, I might have to buy 2 X 1gig sticks. Can you recommend a replacement as past experience has shown that when I try and research for memory myself, I end up going round in circles for ever !!

Nope, not offering any thing. Just thinking what you would be able to get. I've only got a 1gig kit of PC4800 platinum RAM from OCZ. I'd suggest you look at a 2gig kit from G.Skill, such as the HZ stuff I use. Its pretty impressive. Maybe its some thing to think about...

OK thanks very much !

Do you mean the 2gig kit as per MY-008-GS ?
RAM is a mystery to me. The pc4000 is a faster ram, yet it's cheaper than the pc3200

Hunders,

Agent, I think I'm gonna order some of that HZ PC4000 (£152.69). The reviews look pretty good, thanks !

S'ok the_tyke.

To answer your question about the RAM being less expensive is becuase it has tigther timings.

When looking at RAM there are two factors.

1) Speed, i.e. PC**00. The best way to get from PC speed into mhz is divide by 8. So PC4000 / 8 = DDR500 (250mhz). Or PC3200 is DDR400 (200mhz).

2) Timings. The general rule of thums is the tigther the timings the better, but you can't run as tighter timings at higher speeds as you can with lower speed.

There is a ongoing debate about which is better, speed or timings. Speed is how fast the RAM things, and the timings also effect the efficency of the RAM. You with me?

But the RAM you have gone for is a good kit. I hope you the best with it. I've had mine upto 270mhz (DDR540) with the normal timings. Lets hope yours does better :D

Just been reading the Asus manual. Is the memory divider now called the max memclock. If so I presume 400 is 1:1 and 333 is a lesser percentage of FSB with 200 meaning the ram is half the speed of the fsb.

I have got 2 gig of G.skill HZ PC 4000 coming ,so I was going to aim for Agent wd40's timings. eg
1t
tcl 3
trcd 4
trp 4
trc 8

the others : trfc, twr, trwt is it best to leave in auto ?

Hi,

Yes the 400Mhz setting is what 1:1 sync, so the memory will run at the same speed as whatever HTT you set. .

Download A64MemFreq11 and have a play, very useful app (no install) :)

Yup, go for stock settings on the memory first, make sure that works then your free to starting pushing the sticks. It sometimes helps if you relax the memory timings and add vDimm once you start overclocking the ram!

Get the stock settings stable first though and dont forget the *1T* :)
