AAArghhhh Orange. :(

Sorry for the long post but this should get you sorted.

The difference in sync speed between the master and test socket is most likely down to the time of day you plugged it in. You will get higher syncs in the day, at less busy times. About 10AM is the best time re-sync but it will vary from area to area, that's a good bet though.

Your line attenuation is the same in the master and test socket so you should get the same speeds in either after it's plugged in for a while and settled down.

Your noise margin has gone up in the test socket most likely because of re-syncing so often. That's normal and it'll drop in time if you leave it connected.

That speed is exactly what you should be getting for the stats in your test socket. And you'll probably get the same when plugged into the master.

What I would do now is a quiet line test, as suggested above, if that's clear, re-attach the faceplate/filter/internet/phone, then leave it connected 24/7 for at least 3 days or untill your downstream noise margin drops to about 6. Then do a re-sync, idealy about 10AM, definatly not after 4-5PM or when it's dark.

If all is well you should sync a bit higher and get an extra half a meg to 3.5Mb from the 3Mb your getting now. There is a handy table here that shows you the sync rates vs ip profile steps, you only need a bit higher sync to move you up a step for the 3.5Mb.

My old line had 52db attenuation and I was able to maintain a 3.5Mb speed with some strategic re-syncs, yours probably can too.

Once you've got that sorted you could get a filtered faceplate, bt do one called the iPlate and adsl nation do one aswell, they should both perform the same. Then you can install that and re-attatch your extentions. There would be no need for filters at every socket then either.

You what...?

I'm Just interested as to how the time of day or lack of daylight has any bearing on the rate at which a line syncs....

Lovely though that link is it, it doesn't really elaborate much upon the reasoning behind it's claims.

You get lower syncs after dark bacuase of all the extra interference from street lights ect. You will also sync at a higher rate when the network is in a quiet period, such as in the morning on a week day.

i've recommended virgin media all my life. sure its expensive having cable, but i play games online a lot of the time, and my old dsl was disconnecting up to 20 times per day. if you get it on a deal it's much cheaper (along with the telephone line)

ive had virgin at 5 seperate households (im a student :P) and needless to say i never have any disconnection troubles, downtime, or even slow speed due to congestion, its always 95% or more of the rated speed, which is what really ticks me off with todays adsl suppliers, they say up to 2000000000Mb/s and you get a fraction of that.

did a speed test the other day and got 51mbps on a 50mb line, how can you argue with consistent quality service?

Also this is my master socket.

Will these NT5e socket things, go on this one of mine okay
Yea. Just pop it on where you took that other bit off. 2 screws and about 2 minutes of your life.

Your noise margin should be around 6. It's sitting at 15 which means you're currently 2Mb slower than you should be (5Mb?)

okay had a XTE-2005 arrived today from adsl nation.

fitted it on and rebooted router.
This is what I am getting now.

anything else I can do, or is this the max I will get ? thanks

Call orange and get them to reset the noise margin. It should be 6/7db not 15. You will hit about 4.5/5 mb with those stats

Okay this is how it looks at 9.50pm tonight.

I have rang Orange, thats a joke in itself trying to get anyone in there foreign call centre to understand you!

They say they cannot reset noise margin. So no idea.

But this certainly looks better do you think ?

Dont know what to do now. Perhaps I should just leave it. Certainly faster than what I have had in the past from Orange.

Follow my advise in post 21, that's all you need to do.

Noise margin will drop on it's own if you leave it connected. You have the max speed for that line attenuation though. Unless your on LLU then you'll get a bit more if you follow my advise in post 21.

Hi, today my Orange Broadband has been playing up. Tried 3 times to phone them and I get no joy from them. They say there has been a problem and it is sorted now.

My connection is so slow now. Just look at this photo, christ 56k was quicker.

I am thining of leaving them. I dont pay for Broadband from them as I am a contract monthly phone customer with Orange and have been for some 12+ years. I get broadband free as was with freeserve/wanadoo then orange bought them out and excisting customers then got it free.

If I do go for another supplier of broadband, who is good? dont want to really be sending a lot each month as been used to getting broadband free. Even if Orange are pants lately.

Thanks

I was with Orange BB up until Nov 2010. The Shi**iest BB service i have ever experienced in my time online.
I was first with Demon Internet, then Pipex, then Be, then O2 with an O2 Mobile, Orange and now i switched back to BE. Good riddance Orange BB (still have a mobie with them though).
I live 1KM from the exchange, on Orange's 20MB package i was getting about 6MB on a good day, 4-5 MB on a bad day. With Be, im on the 24MB package im getting 11-12.5 MB on a good day, 10MB on a bad.
And your right about the customer support, one word sums it up for me, Pathetic.
Recent news articles also reported on how most BB companies are not giving their customers the speeds advertised and limits on bandwidth, we are in the same boat one way.

Okay small update. This is how it now looks.
Fitted one of those sockets to the master BT Socket. From ADSL Nation that has a phone and modem outlet.

Seems to have settled down the noise and speed slightly increased.
