Abdominal/Core exercises - your recommendations & routines

Has anyone ever tried 3 ball pushups, this is helping me strengthen my core (along with all the other 'core' exercises as well of course!)

There have been studies into muscle recruitment using training aids such as weighted balls and the likes for press ups. The results were that no more muscle fibres are recruited than regular push ups, no more muscle micro tears etc etc. Obviously I don't deny they are likely harder but I think the majority of it comes from the neurological side in regards to stability.

Not saying they're useless just saying something interesting :) I haven't actually read the studies but was told about them by my level 2 & 3 tutor. He may well have been talking out his **** though!

Edit: That book looks interesting :) Haven't tried farmers walks yet, wana give them a go at the strongman meet!

Tried weighted planks last night - whilst I can do them, I need a better backpack and also some better weights to do them, mine very much felt a McGuyver'd effort and nearly hurt me once or twice!

Actually, on this note can anyone recommend a good running backpack? I use a camelback and it's ok, but it slides about a small amount whilst running (maybe they all do?).

I think my issue was it was one of those cross the body one strap affairs - need a two strap one I can crank tight so it stays till! Then I can do planks, pushups and even pullups with it on!

Hanging leg raises are working it for me but the best so far is cycling (i.e. on your back, opposing knee to elbow).

Big compounds as everyone else has said are good but I find they work my back much more than my abs.
