Abit IP35 Pro loosing memory

I've had an Abit IP35 Pro for a few years now, and have been running fine with 8Gb RAM - 4 x 2Gb OCZ PC2 6400. A few weeks ago, the PC wouldn't power on - no fans would spin up, nothing except an F. error code on the motherboard (no number). I spent an age trying to get it to power on, resetting CMOS and other bits but nothing worked until I removed 1 stick of RAM. Down to 6Gb but the PC powered up and worked fine. This was Ok for about a week when it went again, wouldn't power on until another stick was removed. Down to 4Gb, still Ok but now getting puzzled. This evening it went again, and wouldn't power on until a 3rd stick was removed. Down to 2Gb and it's now not good. I've reset CMOS and changed voltage settings in the BIOS, but it doesn't matter which stick of RAM I use, in any of the slots, it now only powers on with 2Gb :(.

I would like to know what the problem is, why would the motherboard slowly be losing power so that it now won't start with more than 1 stick of RAM in? I have 4 SATA HDs and a DVD drive plugged in, removing them doesn't make any difference. Could it be a PSU issue? I can't see how, but it could be possible I guess.

System is not overclocked.

Unfortunately I don't have a spare PSU to try. I originally thought this might be the problem but couldn't understand why removing 1 stick of RAM each time would help/allow the PSU to power up, when removing all other power drawing connections from the motherboard doesn't. Perhaps I'll look to order one of these to see if that does the trick.
