What 3rd party NB heatsinks fit on the Ip35 Pro mobo, i am looking at the, 'Noctua NC-U6 Dual Heatpipe Northbridge Cooler' or 'Xigmatek Porter N881 Northbridge cooler' but not sure if it is compatable with the abit? Whats is the bolt mod i keep hearing about for the Ip35 Pro NB??, as at the moment im getting 80-90 temps on the NB under stress

The bolt-mod makes a hell of a difference.

But 80-90c sounds very very high for the NB. Are you sure that's not the PWM temps?

Yeah sorry, PWM temps. Ive read that they use a crappy thermal pad under the PWM heatsink and some times is not seated correctly. Im in 2 minds weather to do just the bolt mod , or seeings as ive got the mobo out of the case go the whole hog and apply some thermal paste and reseat the whole heatpipe assembly

Just do the bolt mod. My pwm's were hitting 117C (overclocked) I removed the heatsink and found that only 6 pwm's were even touching the heatsink and 3 of those were only bearly. After bolt modding with ceramique compound temps dropped to below 60C.

So you re-seated and added new thermal paste? How tight do i need to tighten the screws, just until i start to feel a bit of resistance on the screwdriver??

Yip.

I would screw the nuts on finger-tight, and then tighten slightly with a screwdriver.

Cool, does thermal paste go off after being opened?, as i have some but has been open for about 7 months

So how much thermal paste do i need to apply to the PWM's, the same amount as you would usually put on the CPU, or thicker?

Here's a pick of my IP35 being bolt modded, you can see the thermal paste and bolts already in place, might give you an idea of how much to apply.

Thanks for posting the pic, so you wouldnt recommend spreading the paste once on the chips? On my CPU's i get a bit of clin-film over my finger and spread the paste over the CPU until its just a very thin layer

use #4-40 X 3/4" (or, 1/2" #4-40)" round headed machine bolts...to insulate the bolt head from the bottom of the motherboard, i used a #6 galvanized washer that had a rubber gromet or washer fused to the galvanized washer...

Hey I like that, dunno why I didn't think of that myself! :D

Now would any kind soul tell me what nuts/bolts/washers I need and roughly what they cost so I don't get mugged off!

I don't know about this size stuff (#4, #6 etc) so be gentle lol! :o
