Just opned task manager and the memory usage floats around 40% idle wheras cpu usage is 1% idle.

Is this normal?

Running vista 64bit premium on below spec
GA-P35C-DS3R
E2140 at 2.6ghz 333x8
Ballistix 5300

Vista likes to munch on RAM so dont be surprised if you see a lot of your memory being used up when your doing nothing.

Im running vista 32 home premium with 2 gigs of ram and its cached so much i only have 16mb free. Any ideas as to why?

Even after I tweaked a few things my mem usage was 40% idle.

I turned indexing and system restore off(as I would do a clean install if anything went wrong) and also turned that rather annoying UAC thingy off.

Also 1 last thing was I turned the Windows sidebar off and the welcome center, i changed that to not run at start up.

I saw a guy post earlier today ( I can't remember where ) that with XP his total memory usage at idle was 23%. He "upgraded" to Vista and made no hardware changes (still 2 x 1gb) and his idle usage was 46%.

So, your usage is 40% of how much memory?

Vista caches a lot of things in memory. It's not actually 'using' the memory and it immediately releases it when it's needed by something else.

XP's memory management was/is crap. Vista's is far better.

Dont people understand this yet? :)

When anyone talks about Vista they go, OMFG Vista uses up so much Memory i getter get 8Gigs of it. :p

Vista handles system Memory so much more diffrently (better) than XP does as Cob has said.

LOL....so what are the 2 areas like? We have an area near us that we have fun fun with. They are known for being backwoods rednecks, very few teeth, limited capacity for abstract thought, inbreeding, etc.
