Short, simple and sweet - Hopefully.

The a and b plans are as follows:

a)

1 x 36GB Raptor (10,000rpm), 16mb Cache - Operating System, Applications*

1 x 320GB (7,200rpm), 16mb Cache - Multimedia (Games, Music, Movies etc..)

- £154.46

*Not sure if I'll be able to run all the applications on such a small drive

b)

1 x 80GB (7,200rpm), 16mb Cache - Operating System, Applications

1 x 320GB (7,200rpm), 16mb Cache - Multimedia

- £108.63

The idea of having a 10,000rpm Raptor run the operating system isn't original, infact it is here that I got the idea to even think about it - but how much difference will it give me in terms of the operating system performance?

I'm still within my budget if I choose plan a), but it rules out visual bits and pieces that I'd like to get for the case.

If the performance difference was actually something and it was recommended - then I could always put the visual stuff on hold - but don't want to get something that isn't going to change much in terms of performance and delay the beautiful side of the case. ;)

So basically, I'm just asking; is it worth the £45-odd hike in cash?

Cheers.

Firstly AFAIK the 36GB raptor doesn't come in a 16mb cache flavour, that's the 74GB version. Also, i haven't seen any 16mb cache 80GB drives, if tehre are, have you got a link? I'd be interested

My 36GB raptor really did make quite a difference for me, games' loading times were reduced (BF2, FarCry, COD2 etc) and also Windows loads up very quickly. To give you an idea, the windows scroll bar only goes across twice on my pc after installing all my programs.

My setup is to have the OS and Games on the Raptor and then partition my larger drive so that there is about a 30GB partition for other apps. That works well as everyday apps don't really need to load fast as they do so already.

Unzipping files, transferring large files etc is sped up a lot with the raptor. I'd say it's one of the best purchases i've made for my pc. I'm now looking for another one ;)

BTW, Performance > Appearance :)

EDIT:  i had a look on OcUK and it seems that the 36GB raptor does come with 16mb cache. My bad, my bad :)

Cheers, Mark. :)

Puts me in a bit of a pickle, at the same time. My games currently take up about 20GB and I'm hoping to rack up many more games to my collection (F.E.A.R, COD3*, BF2 and a few more) - which I know won't be small.

The natural solution would be to put the most important/used games in the Raptor and put the less used ones in the other drive - but I'm a bit of a 'neat freak' when it comes to folders and stuff on the comp - I think all the games would have to be in the same place.

Could well go for the 74GB Raptor based solely on that if the wallet can take the strain.

In regards to the 16mb 80GB drives - I'm not sure which part of my imagination I pulled that from.

I would go with plan A. The new 16mb cache, 36gb raptor are apparently slightly faster than the 150Gb raptors, and make an ideal OS drive. Im planning on replacing my old 8mb cache with one. As you point out, the drive is a bit on the tiny side for OS and Apps. You might be able to fit it in, but persoanlly its too small for me. If I was you, I would go with plan A, but partition the 320Gb drive, and have your apps and game on there. That way there should also be less bottlenecking when apps and windows try and access the harddrives at the same time.

I think I'll just go for the 74GB - run the OS and games solely on that and all other apps on another partition, giving the rest to multimedia.

Sounds good.

Plan A.

I been using a 37GB Raptor and 160GB Seagate 7200.7 in that setup for 3 years now.

No space problems with the 37GB Raptor as I only have games installed which I actually currently play. Its also very easy to backup game save data these days for when you want to uninstall.

I've been having to firefight for space on the 160GB drive though but planning to build a file server in next couple months to sort that out :D

I'm having space problems on my raptor as just my Steam directory takes up 18GB. Then my other games take up about 4GB each so that's why i'm looking for another one.

Is it possible to uninstall some of the single player games in Steam without breaking their multiplayer counterparts?

I'm not sure. When i installed HL2 DM it pre loaded HL2 maybe because it needed the HL2 files?
