About to go with Plusnet - good idea?

I'm after a reliable connection, and although I'm not gaming at the moment I may well do when I set up the 360 again.

I'm looking at the Plusnet Pro package;

With Pro you pay a little bit more for the best broadband experience. It's perfect if you demand fast downloads, no matter what time of day or what you're doing online.

-All traffic prioritised at all times
-Low latency and pings
-Reliable and stable connection
-Up to 20Mb1 download speeds
-Static IP available2 and turn interleaving off if you need to
-20GB usage allowance
-Free usage between midnight-8am (perfect for scheduling large downloads)

Obviously the 20GB allowance isn't huge, but I will happily download between midnight and 8am.

The fact that it's prioritised I'm guessing will mean they don't shape the traffic?

£16.49 a month isn't bad either.

Any things I should look out for / or avoid them?

I used samknows and the available providers are;

The following services are available in your location:
BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
BT Wholesale WBC (21CN)
AOL LLU
Bulldog LLU
TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
Tiscali LLU
Orange LLU (Formerly Wanadoo)

Who would Plusnet come through?

If I remember right Plusnet are owned by BT, so i'd imagine it would use the BT equipment. I was on the Pro package and never had a problem but down graded to another package for less with a 60GB download limit. I havent noticed any difference at all.

I think they will traffic shape to an extent on some things but I cannot remember which. There use to be a table on the website which showed what it would/wouldnt do.

when I was Plusnet I was going through BT Wholesale WBC (21CN).

I found them to be reliable and support OK, but I was too far alway from the exchange to get good download speed (up to 3.5Mb only).

Moved to Virgin 50Mb now and happy with the speed.

You say you are after a reliable connection what problems are you getting now with your ISP.

Could be a problem with your line and box in you house, moving ISP may not help

I believe that Plusnet is owned by BT

Here's the shaping, there is none with the pro, they keep the line speed good with the 20GB allowance.

I'm on the pro and I've never been happier, I always get great pings (20-30ms) and don't have an issue downloading at night.

I switched from virgin after they oversubscribed in my area. To be honest you'll get people who say good and bad things about every provider, it really does depend on how they are doing in your area at the time.

Good thing is they have a no contract option, you have to pay a £25 connection fee and pay for the router if you want one. Actually come to think of it I asked them about how to get out of the contract if I wasn't happy, and it turns you only have to pay the £25 and the cost of the router and you can get out. Double check that is still the same now but you are not locked into anything like most of them.

Well I'm living in a new home with my mum and the BT package we had is now going with my dad to his new place. I've looked at BT and while I've been happy so far, the closest thing to the Plusnet Pro package costs about £18, I'm fairly sure it shapes traffic (correct me if BT don't) and also it's an 18 month contract.

My first ever b/band was with Plusnet so it was before BT took them over, there was a very good user forum which still runs. never had any problems other than my distance from the exchange leaving me with just 1.5meg otherwise I might have stayed & not gone with Telewest/Virgin

I moved from Orange to Plusnet a number of months ago and have been happy with the service I receive. I'm on a non LLU exchange (therefore on BT Wholesale I believe), and I think Plusnet are one of the better 'big' providers. I think the best providers on BT Wholesale are considered to be IDNet etc. but they tend to have lower usage caps.

If you want, consider looking at Xilo or Vivaciti who'll sell you unlimited LLU access on the C&W network.

£40-odd connection and around £18 a month, but unlimited at all hours. They won't supply a router mind, so consider that.

However if you're happy with 20gig peak and would prefer to pocket the change then go for it - nothing at all the matter with the service Plusnet provide.
