Hi. I've just had a look at my PSU and this is what it states:

Output
+12v 20A MAX
+5v 40A MAX

+3.3V 28A MAX
-5V 0.5A MAX
-12V 0.8A MAX

+5V/SB 2.0A MAX

Its a cheapo Win Power jobby. Whats the outcome? Will it be able to run a 1950pro?

Nope, you really need a decent branded PSU thats got about 28a on the 12v rail, i wouldn't trust a cheap generic one as if it goes its more likely to take the whole system with it.

Had it been a brand like FSP, Tagan, Enhance or suchlike I would have said give it a go, but a, to quote you, "cheapo win power jobby" doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence :/

I'm reliably informed that my 380w Tagan with 22A on the 12v rails would be enough to power an x1950gt (in addition to my 2 optical drives, 2 hard-drives, c2d e6300, 2gb of ram, audigy 4, wireless network card), so it's not like you will have to spend fortunes when getting a new power supply.

a 8600gt will work fine with that psu. so there is an option for you if you only want to buy a gfx card and not shell out for a new psu.

I'm on a AGP board I'm afraid. Its been running a 6800gt quite happily for 2 years, how much more does a 1950pro use? Is there a chance it could run it? or am I just hoping in vain?

Was about to post the same question.I can`t justify the expense of a corsair 520 for a mates build tryin to keep cost down built around a64 3700/8600gt or x1950 pro.
Someone else has posted on here running an x1950 pro with a silverpower SP-400P1B 400 WATT PSU.They`re made by tagan and can be had for 25 inc vat unless anyone else has better suggestion?

Guess I'll have to buy and new power supply then.

I've got my eye on two from a certain well known Etailer. One is a Arctic Power 500W PSU With PCI-E, SATA, 20+4, ATX12V, 8pin +12V Connectors etc which is £25 Anyone heard of this company? The other is a Extra Value 550W ATX Silent Neon PSU, has 30A on the 12V and is £20. Which one would you go for?

I know I should not be buying cheap PSU's and if my system was an up to date Core2Duo or something I'd pay extra for a seasonic or something, but its just an Athlon 64 3000+ and I'm already over budget when factoring in the new PSU.

Exactly the same situation for me, over budget... but that's the cost of getting faster and fancy graphics unfortunately.

It's the graphics card you are mainly buying the supply for, although of course the rest of the system is important. The reason everyone is steering you away from el-cheapo supplies is that they tend to skimp on both the quality and quantity of internal components, not to mention the wattages they are rated for make you think they will be superior than they really are. So although it may work when you buy one, the chances of it failing are so much higher than a supply from a trusted brand. And the trusted brands don't have to be expensive.

Antec Earthwatts 380w (slightly inferior to Seasonic's other products but it remains a Seasonic-built psu) £30.27 -27A on 12v-

Silver Power 400w (budget brand belonging to Tagan, the actual manufacturer is Enhance who are reputable) £24.43 -26A on 12v-

FSP 350w (another budget brand who churn out simple reliable products) £25.84 -25A on 12v-

I don't know about those cheaper units, but I couldn't face another cheap PSU. After reading the silentPC review, and doing some research, I am exceptionally happy I plumped for the Corsair HX 520W. It cost £72 DELIVERED.

Likely your looking at least £35 delivered for the units you mention. But for peace of mind with outstanding voltage regulatoin and a little future proofing, the corsair is beautiful, not to mention quiet.

I didn't want to spend that money, but since i also overclock components, it was the logical choice, if unfortunately a little bit expensive.

Try to factor in flogging your old PSU as well :)

Where can I pick up the silver power from? Can all these 3 listed above power a 1950 pro? The Antec earthwatts looks interesting.

Cheers mav thought you`d gone on holiday its very quiet around here lol.
I`ve been looking at the Coolermaster IGreen 430W before looks the job and does 27a on the 12v,its efficient and has some cool features.Think its a nice middle ground and can be had for just under 40 big ones.
Google is your friend warren :)

I wouldn't have mentioned them if they couldn't cope with an x1950pro :)

Someone actually got an 8800gtx-based system working with a 380w earthwatts. Not something you'd want to keep running for the longterm however :)

If you took some time to look around I'm sure you'd find places selling the Silver Powers.
