About to order a Canon 550D with the 18-55 kit lens and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 MK2. It's a cheap lens but the camera is going to be used to to do a short film in low light conditions. I also despise Flash and apparently this lens is great for indoor portraits in low light conditions. Fortunately thanks to saving up my Clubcard vouchers from Tesco for the last year the whole thing is only setting me back £200 which leaves room for other goodies.

I'm off to China for a few weeks in early September. This is clearly an excellent opportunity for photography so can anyone recommend any other lenses which I could take? (Perhaps I could buy some out there!?)

Many thanks,

My mate has the 50mm f/1.8 and its awesome for the cash, cant comment on wether itll be good for recording but i'd imaging it would be pretty good (if you can live without zoom but you have the kit lens for zoom)

200 quid... bargin

I've heard the build quality is awful and it's noisy when you adjust the focus but most of our video work doesn't involve dialogue so not a problem. Ironically the fact it's cheap doesn't bother me because the short film we're about to work on is going to be put through all sorts of filters in post to give the footage a gritty feel.

Yeah I had a load of Tesco club card vouchers which are worth double their value when redeemed at the leading high street photography chain (not sure about competitor rules) so I managed to save quite a bit. Just waiting for Tesco to send the vouchers.

Congrats on getting a bargain. Shame you couldn't sell those vouchers and get something like a used 40D or 5D. How does the Nikon 5100 stack up against the 550D?

I'm not too fussed mate. I've only just graduated and I'm very much in the beginner bracket when it comes to photography. I can always upgrade to a superior camera in the future when my skills improve and when I can afford superior gear :)

I considered the 5100 as I already have a Nikon SLR so I wouldn't have to buy a lens. General consensus seems to be it offers superior image quality but can't match the 550d with regards to video. It also doesn't have a DOF preview. The Nikon D50 I've used for the last few years has been fantastic so in some respects I might be taking a risk by changing to the Canon.

as I said its an awesome lens 'for the cash'
Its like £100, you get what you pay for lol

After playing with my mates I thought it was unreal.
In regards to noise, I set it up the same way I set my D80 up (low ISO / F/1.8) and it was just as clear as the lenses I use, just with a very shallow DOF and some wicked Bokeh

IMO most definetly worth the cash and one of the most fun/creative lenses you can buy

That settles it, sounds exactly like the sort of thing I'm after. Cheers.

You could also buy a manual 50mm for a lot less, adapt it, and shoot your video with it. If you don't need AF there are hundreds of 50mm that are /at least/ as good as the canon, and are built like miniature tanks.

I use the Pentax Takumar 50mm f1.4 for example, but there are many, many others. You could also get a cheap 28mm f2.8 for a "wider" look. EOS adapters are about 10 quid for most other mounts.

You could do that and take a punt on the quality of the converter for the mount and the quality of the lens you buy - or balance that against having a 12 month warranty and a brand new, shiny lens for around £80 with the added convenience of AF should you need it.

You are about to buy the same camera and 2 of the 3 lenses I own. I can say you will be very happy with the 550d its excellent for its price point. The kits lens is very good and in the right conditions the nifty 50 can be too. My experience with the 50mm is mixed however, my first copy would consistently front focus when on wider apertures, I got it swapped and the new one was much better. You will also notice that when taking pictures through the view finder in lower light it will still miss focus around 20% of the time (my experience). You can improve this situation oddly by using live view, its slower but seems to be more accurate, the explanation for this behaviour is the camera uses phase detect focusing when using the view finder and contrast detect in view live mode. However, a word of caution if you are intending to use this lens wide open for low light video. It sounds like you intend to use it for video indoors, just be aware that at f1.8 and within a room the depth of field of this lens is very small (single digit cm ). This will give you a nice shallow dof with your subject in focus and everything else out, but in my experience of video the subject moves and will most likely move in and out of focus. You can of course re focus but the lens will search for a bit and the noise of the AF motor is really noticeable on the end video. I suggest you search youtube for videos of exactly this there are plenty showing the 550d in video mode focus searching, there may even be ones using the 50mm. Of course, if you get it right the video out of this camera can be stunning ( you might want to check out magic lantern firmware (google it) if you intend to do a lot of video)

My 3rd lens suggestion to complete your travel kit would be the Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM. Its not as cheap as the 55-250mm kit tele but the extra is well worth it. It's not very heavy for a long tele and I love shooting with this lens I use it a lot of the time, its surprisingly good for portrait shots.

Lastly, you do have access to the members market here and there are often some good deals to be had on canon teles in there, from memory there is a 70-200mm f/4L (non IS) in there at the mo, you can't by a sharper tele than that.

Edit, oh I forgot to mention, I travel to main land China a lot and in my experience lenses are cheaper over here from the internet than they are over there (Chinese import duty is high to promote domestic product purchase). Airport duty free is pretty much the same price as high street shops which I don't understand but you will be able get a bargain if you fly to China via Hong kong.
