Surely technology has advanced enough by now that it would be possible to use some GPS to get gaps between drivers much closer to where they were before the SC.

I have suggested before they could just have them stop on the grid and restart maintaining the gaps from the split times before the incident like in rally stages, it's hard to change traditions though.
