What precedent? They were side by side into the corner and Verstappen didn't leave a space. It was clear cut, which is why the stewards didn't need to deliberate for more than a minute.

Lewis left a big door open, Max in entitled to go into the space and he kept his whole car on the track, if Max went off track to do it then fair enough, but keeping the whole car on the track and taking the two corners, vs just drive straight over? It is a horrible decision, and next year that's the new rule now.

Keeping the car on the track is irrelevant if you don't leave space for the other driver
