Use what?
PeerGuardian 2

It blocks connections to and from black listed government, anti P2P and spyware IP addresses.

They'll never be able to connect to you, so they will never know.

just a generic email as they've probably been informed that you've been found to be d/l copyright material by another company and they've sent you the email to cover their backs.

if you're using torrents and you d/l a lot then you've probably been traffic managed to.

I use whatever the one in Azureus is tbh. But i only really download Linux stuff and other legal torrents how it is. :).

Just to clear up a few things, this isn't about downloading, it is uploading that gets you one of the warning notices.

If you are using P2P software then the initial download isn't of interest, it is while you are sharing the file back out to others that you commit the offence.

As to ISPs logging your packets, have you any idea just how much storage they'd need to hold all that data?

I'm not going to go into detail but if you attract the wrong sort of attention what you do can end up being logged in extreme detail but you are not going to get that sort of interest by doing a bit of P2P and it is certainly not routine to be logging traffic in any detail.

IPSs are not pro-actively looking for people uploading copyrighted material, they just respond to reports of what others have found to be available from their customers. It isn't necessary to log traffic to catch people offering material for upload anyway.

I do understand the point of view and I'm not going to get into the ethics of this, but I've yet to see anyone pursued merely for downloading as the specific offence they ususally go for involves the onward distribution of copywrite material not just having a copy in your DVD collection.

The problem for people using P2P rather than newsgroups is that they automatically 'distribute' the material at the same time so they are much easier to catch.

You must be new to torrents :p

Trackers are the websites that track the users and basically tell seeders/leechers where other seeders and leechers are.

So Azureus isn't a tracker, neither does it have any kind of IP protection, that the 3rd party program PG2 offers.

Actually, its not what you've downloaded thats the problem. Its what you've uploaded.

They target the people that share the files rather than who download's them

:(

There is no amount of downloading that would cause an ISP to want to look at exactly what you were downloading, they will only be concerned about the sheer data volume in relation to whatever their Fair Usage Policy is or what the download limits are on your account.

The reason is that once ISPs start getting involved in determining the legality of what you do with your link they run the risk of becomming liable for not stopping you from doing certain things so they adopt the principal of claiming to be a 'common carrier' like the Post Office.

So much of this has yet to be properly tested in Court but you won't find an ISP bothering to look in detail at what you are doing unless specifically requested to do so by one of the permited authorities under RIPA.

Azureus has channels in it where you can download stuff, and look at thumbnails of things you can download. I'm not sure, but I think it is their own one.

edit: azureusplatform is the tracker url.

get the safepeer plugin for azureus

it uses Peerguardian's IP block list and you can set it to update regularly - stopping these companies harvesting your IP address and reporting you to your ISP.
