Abysmal grip on the CTR

How does it compare to other NA 1.6 engines would be a fairer question.
Only if you're comparing the engine in isolation. Yes, it's a hell of a 1.6 engine but in the CTR application it results in a compromised car which you have to keep above 6000rpm to get anywhere in.

There's a reason the rest of the current hot-hatch brigage, such as the Golf GTI, Focus ST and Astra VXR have gone for turbo power. I'm sure Honda would have us believe it's simply because they can't produce a NA engine with the same specific power output as the CTR's but in reality it's because VW, Ford & Vauxhall realise not everyone wants to go everywhere at 6000rpm, something which is lost on Honda.

Take the GTI as an example, the same power output as the current CTR but it produces 207lbft of torque from 1800rpm, resulting in a much more civilised and tractable engine.

OT but i saw the ad for the clio 197 at the cinema.

rain sensing wipers and auto steering headlights... on a hot hatch? :(

yeah, and i know the turbocharged engines produce more torque, but in reality its fun to wring the neck out of a revvy little block

This would explain why its pretty much gutless below 6000rpm.

No it wouldnt. One of the good things about vtecs is the torque is produced quite low down......the peak is high but never really that much different.

does this torque curve look bad to you??

Ek9 Graph

You guys never consider gearing when taking into acount Torque.....The Current CTR probable has more torque at the wheels than some oil burners

Where is the VTEC changeover on that? Still at 6000rpm ish?

6000 revs of VTEC must be insane fun!!

Na im not too sure there is even a VTEC change on it....it starts to really fly at 9k  There is a best motoring of it. Im sure you could find clips of just the spoon civic if you search

As for the Tyres i never seem to see anyone saying anything good about the RE040's....ever

I swear we all agreed that vtec no torque discussions were to be held every Wednesday.

And it's Friday today.

Did I miss a memo or something?

No, still love em. Very unique experience driving a Type R. Suited me down to the ground.

Back OT - try the RE010's. I was so annoyed with the RE040's I rang Bridgestone and asked them to spec an alternative tyre and they said go for the RE010 - same pattern, same sidewall construction, softer compound. The RE050 is also an option.

In terms of wet grip it's RE010 best, then RE050 then RE040.

One thing also to bear in mind (not relevant to eidolon but was for me) - the Jap Potenza's are different compound to the UK ones. So an 040 Jap and an 040 UKEU are NOT the same tyre.

THats why I have the JZ spec 040s

Arent Japanese roads my from volcanic ash that get the tyre to heat up quicker 70s bikes with yokos were awful in the winter

It's odd, RE040's are marmite tyres - you either love them or loathe them. I must admit I love them and haven't had any problems in nigh on 3 years and my CTR has 240bhp

I do however, adjust my driving style according to the conditions. Yes it's possible to spin the wheels up in the wet or icy conditions but that's easily controlled with your right foot.

Perhaps you hit a patch of diesel on the road or something?

Toyo T1R's or Yoko Parada's seem to get good reviews in the wet

You've gotta laugh or you'd cry. I'm just waiting for Will now, I'm in the mood for a fight. :p
I can safely predict he's probably close to being drunk to the point of unconsciousness about now :D

Potenza's in any guise seem to be very 'hot' tyres - I agree with whats been said above, I cant understand why Honda have specified them as a UK tyre - far too hard unless they're really hot.

That'll be 5500rpm on a B16B.

As for gutless, my mildly fettled B16A2 gives me 105lb ft between 1800 and 5500rpm and then 125lb ft from 5500 to 8000rpm, two flat torque graphs accross the rev range. Allowed me to reel in much more torquey machines ;). Find me another 9 year old 1.6 NASP with anywhere near the same power and torque in mildly fettled form.

Wonder if a set of Toyo Proxes T1-R would be better, and cheaper.

Horrid horrid tyres.

Sticking a higher profile RE040 on my teg from Merlin to replace the T1R immediatley improved turn in and response. The rear tyres feel so squidgy now though. Does make it fairly easy to drive fast though with that mix, plenty of communication but the skittish nature of a cold Bridgestone is only at the front so i get understeer with plenty of warning and only at decent speed.

In an ideal world we would run winter tyres and use less salt on the road like in Japan. T1R are great for weather etc, rubbish for performance. I wanna try Paradas's next if i keep my Teg, cant say im choosing them over wet performance though, as i touched on in another thread its pretty obvious water evac. isnt what the tread design is for.

im not going to read all this thread but I will say this

it is the RE40's they are a joke tyre.

get Goodyear F1s on and it will be a new car.

Bridgstone cacky tyres OUT!

I repeat

BUY GOODYEAR F1's

you wont get better on a CTR!

Irrelevent, as it was never marketed against, and sold alongside, 1.6 NASP's.

Just like the previous Civic Type-R wasn't a Ford Focus 2.0 Zetec rival...
