Is there a right way and a wrong way to test a Laptop AC Adaptor? I have a tester and i put the black cable with the metal spike on the outside of the AC Adaptor end and the Red cable spike on the 'inside' of the connector end.

When i do this nothing shows on the multimeter. If i swap the cables round i get -15.

The Adaptor doesn't work with laptop. Tried my adaptor and that boots laptop fine. Obviously a new adaptor needed. Just wanted to know if i was testing the polarity correctly. Thanks

Polarity makes little difference in voltage testing as it provides an indication only.

-15v tested that way around just tells us that it's providing 15 volts. Whether 15v is good or bad rather depends on what the laptop is expecting. The label on the charger should declare the output voltage.

Not sure why it would work in reverse polarity and not forward though.
