Accelero X1 or S1+Turbo Module for 8800GT

I was thinking of getting a better cooler for my 8800GT because I've seen it can be clocked pretty easily and whilst I don't mind using the stock cooler that came with it (single slot), I don't like the thought of anything in my rig going over 80C.

So I found out that the Accelero S1 (and so I assume X1) fit to the 8800GT nicely and also lower temperatures lots, thanks to that thread in this part of the forum. I've not heard much about the X1 however so I was curious as to how good it is.

Basically my question is, would I see much more of a temperature drop out of the S1+Turbo module than I woould from the X1? I mean I know there's something like a £10 difference when you compare the two which whilst it's not that much, I'd probably find it easier to just fit one cooler rather than a cooler and then fans on top of that.

Oh and if I were to get the S1, because I've heard that the tape on the Ramsinks that come with it is useless, is it really worth fitting them on the Ramsinks at all? I'm sure I read somewhere that someone got a better overclock out of the memory when the heatsinks were actually *off* the ram

Get the S1, and attach a 'silent' 120mm fan to it. You should end up with a graphics card that runs silently and doesn't ever go above 50 degrees.

I found the supplied ramsinks to be fine. I did ensure that I cleaned the chips thoroughly (I used ArticClean) beforehand and they stuck perfectly well. I can't comment on how the card would perform without them though.

My overclocked GT has gone from load temps in excess of 70 degrees (with fan at 100% deafening me) to 45-50 load, silent.

I was starting to sway towards the S1 direction even if it does cost more, but do you think a silent 120mm fan (Sharkoon silent eagle or similar) would be better than the turbo module in terms of temperatures?

Oh and about changing the cooler, did you find it difficult to actually do it? I mean... does the stock heat sink come off easily enough or is there some sort of special way to do it?

I fitted the S1 with Turbo fans myself. It was a first for me

Take your time and clean thoroughly. You may need some extra vreg cooling sinks (it depends on which model s1 you get - have a look at Arctic Coolings web site if of interest.)

To clean ram I cleaned twice with Akasa tim clean and lastly with Iso Alcohol. I had bought some thermal tape but it was not needed - just made sure when installing the sinks I held 'em on , with a bit of pressure, for at least 30sec.

Buy some Akasa thermal tape, i put a heavy book on my ram sink's & they still fell off when turned upside down.

This was on an X1900XT but the principle is the same.
For the sake of a few quid extra it really is worth it, nothing worse than a "chink, chink, chink" & having to take the cooler off again.
