Hi

Got a call last night and basically my aunt is offering to give us her old car for free - I didn't take the call so all I could find out about it so far is it's a L-reg Ford Fiesta, automatic, 1.2 *I think*, mot up in June

Now I was planning on buying a car in September for around £1500, but this has thrown a spanner in the works a bit.

We promised to tell them our decision tonight incase we say no they can sort something else out for it. If we say yes then I will have to pay for the insurance (19, been driving for 1 year) . . . I know there's not a lot of info but does it sound worth it? It's hard to pass up the offer of a free car but the mot is due soon, it will have to make the Reading-Leeds trip about 6 times a year, and I've never driven an automatic so not sure what that's like

It doesn't feel right turning down a free car but is it more hassle than it's worth?

If you don't currently have a car, then take up the offer.

Even if you want to get rid of it in 6 months time, it's still 6 months of free motoring.

But what I was thinking was that money spent insuring it could be used instead to save for a better car. Hmm I am edging towards accepting it though

If you would have to be driving something anyway, then the Fiesta is pretty cheap. If you insure that and then after 2 months find the car you want, you can just swap the insurance over and pay the difference. You won't have really lost anything regards saving for a "new" car as you'd have to pay for insurance anyway :p

It will be cheap to insure, and fairly economical.

I would accept it. You may think that by not getting it you could have saved the money from insuring it towards a better car but that would also probably be dearer to insure.

Accept it and use it. It will be an ok car. I had a fiesta once and it was cheap motoring.

I wouldn't start mentioning it will be a nice car to drive - it won't! If it's the dreaded 1.1 Auto it will be utterly crucifying to try and accelerate in (Literally, must be more than 20 seconds to 60mph), with the 1.3 Auto not being that much better. If, and only if, it is free, and if, and only if, you would be insuring a car anyway, is it really worthwhile :)

My first car was free from my grandad when he became too ill to drive it. I'd definately take her up on it, drive it until something expensive breaks then get shot of it imo.

1.1 Auto?

Be careful, could be in serious trouble if you boot it in the wrong places, lift off oversteer etc.

Don't bet on it being cheap to insure. Do some quotes first mate. The 1.3 fiesta auto I was going to be given was hideous to insure compared to my 306.

Id accept it and get insured on it in your own name asap, start building up some no claims as soon as you can, youll have your own car, etc etc.

You can then use that car to drive to cars you wana have a look at, you can use the car to get around whilst you dont have one basically, and then you can use it to part exchange it if needs be.

It won't be a 1.2 on an L reg. But regardless of what size it is, it's a free car - take it!

as youve already passed your test then the automatic shouldnt be too much of a problem and you'll get used to it. accept the keys graciously and save yourself money - its not a bad free car and could have been much worse!

pros: youve just saved yourself the cost of a car + insurace :)

Take it, yes you could save for something better but you'll still get bummed for insurance.

It's a free car :) :)

Just stick on 3rd party only insurance - don't worry about fire and theft. The local twoc squad may strike but I think you can be fairly well assured that won't happen. Unless you live in Goldthorpe near barnsley, in which case it will happen as my mate can testify - someone stole his 1.1 white fiesta. Oh the shame!

Being that you were going to get a car in 6 months, I would say take it, insure it on a bonus accelerator policy for 9 months and then get something better after that. With a years NCB, you will have more options on what to buy.
