Acceptable backlight bleed

hmm will have a play with the settings but it did seem quite bad but then ive not really played with a really good screen to know the difference, although my cheap Sammy wasn't any better, as an aside 144hz pure silk don't know why I didn't do this before

Personally I think people get a bit too worked up over backlight bleed as often you can only really see it under the worst of circumstances - that said that does look like its bordering on the unacceptable.

What I will say is that was in absolute worse conditions lights off black background with a frankly awful nexus 4 camera phone it isn't anywhere near that bad in real life

I think that will have minimal impact on your viewing experience in 99% of conditions. If this was a good VA panel, it'd be a disaster, but contrast is poor on TN panels. There's a significant area of bleed, but it's pretty weak illumination ... some have much brighter areas of bleed.

Unless you sit in darkness looking at dark things or playing very dark games the whole time, I think you're unlikely to notice it.

Have you had much chance to test drive your new monitor yet Stuie?

Considering purchasing one of these monitors :)

Finding a screen with absolutely no backlight bleed is difficult. My LG IPS panel has a slight purple glow when viewed from different angles (only noticeable on dark screens). My other PC is using an AOC TN screen and has slight bleeding around the edges, but nothing major.

What are you currently using at the moment?

going from 60 to 144hz is brilliant not a brick to the face difference but great non the less, its more subtle fluid changes everything feels quicker cause the display is quicker. Its difficult to describe, one things for certain I wouldnt go back to 60hz now

Using a Dell UltraSharp U2412M - Do you need to be running at 120fps to make use of the 120hz ?

Not that I could tell although there arnt many games that drop below much that on my system anyway, fps and hz doesnt seem to be directly related in that way I run vsync on most of my games and running rage metro and borderlands 2 was silky smooth and very sharp compared to my cheap samsung

Motion blur is proportional to frame rate, so you need to be running >60fps to notice a difference in that respect compared to using a decent 60Hz monitor (or running a 120/144Hz monitor at 60Hz). The low input lag and reduced delay compared to 60Hz when using Vsync can be felt even at 60fps, however. But the reduced delay between frames, alongside the motion blur reduction, requires a higher frame rate. So for optimal results, frame rate matching the refresh rate but bonuses to be had elsewhere especially as the frame rate creeps well above 60fps.

The other thing that surprised me about this screen was how heavy it is compared to the old sammy a good sign its well made and solid

Speaking of backlight bleed, I think I'll be sending mine back :(

It's way worse today than it was yesterday .... worsening bleed is not something I've experienced before ... only thing I can think of is that it heated up and expanded a little in the warmth of the central heating last night :/

As I mentioned in the other thread, picture was a little washed out yesterday (due in part to very small amounts of backlight bleed round practically the entire frame, though more so bottom). That was perfectly acceptable.

Today ... it's 1000x worse. The bleed got brighter everywhere. There is no black in a darkened room at all, the whole monitor is mega washed out and it's very noticeable even with light colours in a fully lit room that the lower part of the monitor is considerably brighter :(

Pic below. You get a good idea of just how much brighter the lower 2/3rds of the monitor is than the top 1/3.

Bleed was same distribution yesterday, but magnitude is infinitely worse now :(

That looks awful mate, i'd not stand for that..

I'm sure if you forward on your picture to the supplier they'll be happy to offer a replacement/alternative/refund.

RMA'd it. It's being picked up tomorrow. Also ordered another one simultaneously as it's more convenient to receive / send on the same day.

Hopefully the new one is better.

Off topic but out of curiosity, what courier did you use to send it back?

OCUK arranged for DPD to pick it up.

In my exeperience, DPD are one of if not the best (at least in my area). Almost always puncutal, send you texts with an hour window when it'll be delivered (and almost always falls in said window). Also very helpful when you ring them.
