Since I couldnt see an Operating System Section I will ask here.

My uncle through ways unknown completely ****** his computer up but there was stuff on his computer he wanted and it wouldnt boot in safe mode.

So I put the CDin and said repair windows and managed to get it into safe mode and copy all the "My Documents" stuff over to a folder in E: drive and then proceeded to format C and put a fresh copy of windows on.

UH-OH now after re-installing and he tried to access the files on E drive it says "Access Denied" and shows the folders as 0kb but the drive has 3.45GB in use ??????

Also after re-installing windows I stored some programs from a DVD Disc I got (From Magazine) onto E: Drive but now even though everyone is an administrator only he can open them ????? WTF.

I then proceeded to connect the HDD to another computer and it still wont allow access says "Access Denied" and says he dont have rights to access it but the account has the same name as his old one.

BUT the really wierd thing is everything on E: cannot be accessed because of that message and everything on D: can be accessed I cant figure out why only E: is having restricted rights just because I re-installed windows.

Is there a program that will bypass this "Access Denied" message on his partition and allow him to access the folders or is he well and truly screwed cause about 75% of the files were documents and 3-3.5GB is a LOT of ******* documents.

Currently using XP Home.

When you copied the files over, you should have set permission to everyone full control on the documents. Should be pretty easy to sort though:

1.) On the root of the drive containing the documents, go to edit > select all then file > properties.

2.) Click the security tab (If you can't see the security tab, go to sharing and security from the file menu then 'just enable sharing' and follow the screens through.

3.) When you have the security tab, go to the advanced button, then the owner tab and change the owner to 'administrators'. You will now be able to access the security page.

4.) Back on the general tab of the advanced dialog box, ensure 'propegate permission to child objects (Or words to that effect) is ticked and then ok that.

5.) Finally, add 'everyone' to the security list and tick the full control box and wait whilst it applies permissions to the objects.

6.) You should then be able to access the files :)

EDIT: Same should go for the DVD stuff as well

Could you put the drive in an XP Pro rig? It's easier to get the security tab on XP Pro :) Come to think if it, I'm not sure if you can actually get the security tab on XP Home :o If you can't see the security tab on XP Pro, open My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > Untick 'Enable simple file sharing' > OK :)

Ok trigger thanks for help and I would just like to say that to get the securit tab in windows home you need to be in safe mode (It was a long shot but tried it and it paid off :) )

Jus thought I would let u know incase anyone asks you in the future.

Thanks very much for your help my uncle will be very grateful cause he had all the documents needed for the insurance on his drive and it couldnt get to them, along with timetables for his work and eveything lol.

tbh the idiot should have backed it up as soon as he saved the document but hey :) .
