I have my camera photos stored on a wd external drive. Unfortunately this appears to have died.
The same photos are also on an internal hdd but this is not in my computer. I also dont really want to connect it if i dont have to.
I took the external drive apart and its pretty simple with a wd green inside. When i connected the wd black to this it powers up and needs to be initilised. Inititialised though the files do not appear.
Would the file format / access need changing for it to be used with the external interface instead of directly to sata and power internally?

No, its exactly the same, it should just work.
Try putting it in your computer to see if it works. Maybe it's just the circuit board on the external drive that has failed.....

Nope it doesnt work internally either. Bad sectors on the drive and wouldnt initilise or even show up in a partition program.
I did connect another drive via internal sata and saved the files to an ssd.

External interface (wd mybook) must change the drive access, once its connected as external files cannot be accessed when connected internally and vise versa.

Guess the lesson here is that it pays off to backup your backup!
