Smashed my xperia z3 screen at the gym and it's unresponsive. Local shops won't fix a sony, so I'm wondering if there is a quick way of controlling it without sending it away to be fixed. My bluetooth headset still works so I can answer/end calls but I just can't do anything. Does there exist some kind of controlling device which you can plug in, kind of like a mouse?

Bluetooth controllers / mouse might work although it will be inconvenient and might not work on everything.
Basic features could possibly be controlled via voice through your bluetooth headset as well.
To be honest for what the phone is worth I'd consider getting a new one.
If you're just after transferring the data then plugging it into PC will let you copy/backup everything off it.

Is it both the screen and touch panel that's broken? Can you still see things on the screen? If so maybe a USB OTG adapter and a USB mouse could work, should allow you to unlock the phone and then connect to a PC to back up everything.
Not as simple as plugging in to a pc to get the data off if touch doesn't work. You have to enable data transfer (PC mode) via the touch screen.
I looked in to this recently for my own phone, I even bought a OTG hdmi with usb mhl cable, turned out it's only compatible with samsung devices as it has more pins. I ended up having to replace the screen just to get my data off. My S7 is on it's way for tomorrow.
