Hi,

I have a folder in windows XP that I want to access via my computer that's on windows 7. Now I'm able to access it when the Guest account on XP doesn't have a password but this means that everybody on the same Workgroup can access my files so...

I typed net user guest "password here" to set a password on the guest account in XP.
EDIT: this was done via cmd in run

Now in windows 7 when i double click I'm asked the username... which is Guest and the password but it says it can't access it.

What am I doing wrong here?

Thanx

Can you not log on using your local account on that machine instead of the guest account?

It works for me on my setup (Vista - XP)

what do you mean?

On the XP PC all I have is administrator

Now I realised that windows 7 uses the guest account to connect to XP because....

if i take guest out of the permissions for the folder I want to share it disapears in Windows 7. So I don't know how to change this but anyways be it Guest account or another it'll be the same story if it can't access it if the account in XP has a password

Go to MyComputer on the W7 machine

Try accessing the main share on the XP machine by typing this in the address bar of the W7 machine:

\\computername\c$

Then try to log on using your XP administrator credentials

P.S havent been to bed yet so excuse my grammar and long winded explainations ;)

so I typed
\\nameofXPcomputer\c$

and yes I get the window asking for username and password but then i get Network error

Windows cannot access \\nameof XPcomputer\c$

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network.

There is no problem with the network because it works when there is no password set on Guest
Anyways it's dependant of the Guest Account because if I take password off Guest I can access it again regardless of the fact that I have a password on my own personal account that I use on XP

I need to grant my windows 7 account to enter the XP folder

try "nameofxpmachine\Guest" as the username

ok when I do this I see on the windows 7 logging window underneath password that the Domain change after i hit \

and it switches from the windows 7 computer name to the XP computer name but it's still not working

\\XPCOMPUTERNAME is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this netowrk ressource
Contact.......

Multiple connections to a server or shared ressource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared ressource and try again

On the XP machine. Follow these instructions and set the policy to Classic instead of Guest.

http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/10472.html

Then log in with the administrator credentials and the same address as I said above.

Job Done (Hopefully)

well it was already set to this, so the issue isn't coming from there.

I'm pulling my hair right now, damn this is pathetically complicated

Thanx for helping

EDIT:
There is something I don't understand here.
In XP > User account there is Administrator which is me and Guest
Now when i click on Create a "new account" and enter a new account name then "Next" it says....

You must create at least one computer administrator account before you can create other accounts.

how is this possible if I am the administrator on the PC

EDIT 2: so i just tested with the new account I created and it doesn't work. It only works if I set Guest in the permissions in windows XP.

Why is windows 7 only trying to communicate with the guest account that's on the XP system
Also I tried with and without password for the guest account, windows 7 doesn't care it just enters folder anyways regardless of the fact that a password was set on the Guest account
