We were coming off a roundabout into a slip road which leads to a dual carriageway run up, Anyway! the car infront was about to join in on the carriage way as we were all approaching road speeds for it, I was roughly doing 40 mph at this time when for what to me seems like no reason at all he totally anchored his car and eventually came to a halt.

My reactions weren't exactly amazing but instead of ploughing into the back of him I almost managed a full stop but the fronts totally locked so I kinda lifted and managed to mostly turn and get along side him on his left, hitting my right wing slightly on his rear end - instinct 100% took over here because when I got out of the car to check everything was OK I don't know how I managed that in such a small space.
In hindsight I know I could have been going a bit slower because the road was wet but I still don't understand why he stopped so aggressively, he says someone pulled into the lane he was about to join so had to stop but I'm fully aware I was watching too and saw nothing of the sort otherwise I wouldn't have been accelerating like he was.

I wish I had a camera installed in my car so I could see what happened again because it's very cloudy in my memory now.

Huge story sorry! anyway we exchanged details etc police were there almost instantly somehow and they just wanted to make sure we exchanged details.

I've never had an accident before so I just want to know what I should be expecting, I know since I was behind it's all down to me, I accept that. So after paying my excess does that fix both our cars? is this likely to kill me on renewal? (the damage on his car was virtually nothing, my wing however crumpled like a bag of crisps)

I phoned insurance earlier to inform them of everything since I know the other chap has too I'm just waiting on a call from someone to assess any damage.

I'm afraid you don't have much to go on, of course it's a load of crap that someone pulled in front of him but either way you were too close and couldn't stop in time so it's technically your fault.

You pay the excess and they sort the rest, you'll have a fault claim on your insurance and you can run some quotes to see how much it'll go up, if it goes up that is.

Sounds like a "crash for cash" collision, how many were in the car you hit? You may find the amount of whiplash claims goes up when they claim.

Some guy tried to do this to me on Wandsworth High St the other night, cheeky ****** even smiled at me as I eyeballed him going past when the lanes split out.

Going with ^^ on our way back from the grandparents yesterday someone overtook us then braked fairly quickly down to about 20mph right in front of us (60mph limit) - fortunately dual carriage way and clear of traffic so managed to pull around them and they were obliviously fixing their hair/makeup and probably had no idea of what they'd just done.

Noticed a lot lately way too many drivers seem to expect other drivers to look out for them :S

I understand some of your suspicions of crash for cash, but I honestly think it was pure hesitation/panic maybe? Since I was the one to approach his car first I spotted he had a very young baby in the back, I asked the few people in the car if they were all OK before we went on to the swapping of details ceremony.
I've been warned by my Dad especially they will probably all claim they have whiplash and other life changing injuries, such a shame society reacts this way to make it a payday, saddens me :(

I just realised the situation you were in - kind of went over my head on first reading - see that happen a lot especially from older drivers who really should have their licenses taken from them :S kind of tricky one as I've kind of come to expect it but at the same time you want to be doing a good speed to join the flow of traffic.

Guessing it will go 50/50 they'll claim whiplash, everyone gets their cars fixed and you take a hit on renewal :S

OP

You hit him, you lose, drive slower and keep a bigger distance in future. (sorry this sounds harsh)
Always treat every other driver on the read as a retard.

Think yourself lucky the feds did not book you for Driving without due care.

Your insurance will go up, how much is down to your ge and how much NCB you have(left)

They are also prime spots for people hesitating and braking - don't attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

What can I say, I'm a cynic. Lots of it went on round here - a massive scam ring got blown open by some office workers who noticed a lot of accidents outside their building a couple of miles from here using the A34 bypass roundabouts and slip roads.

I'll concede the Sunday ditherers are out in force over the festive bank holidays tho.

Hey guys, could someone with experience in this clarify for me here, my excess is £400. Now there's a bunch of conflicting ideas on the net about this but, do I have to pay my excess if I choose NOT to have my insurance repair my car even though the accident was my fault, most things I've read suggest this is the case in a fully comp scenario.
I know I could go ahead and phone my insurer but waiting in a 20min queue on the phone right now isn't possible :)

I'm losing 4NCB for this so saving 400quid on excess and getting a friend to fix my car at mates rates is appealing.
