Accident on the M6 northbound today, junction 5/7.

Majority of my work is done in Birmingham post coded areas and the M5/M6 are used reguarly by myself. The last major accident to happen on either the m5/m6 (I think it was the m5) was a 10 car pile up, caused by a German Lorry driver.

Today it was caused by a lorry driver, who ploughed into the central reservation. The lorry turned, spewed out it's contents accross all three lanes.

I can't help but think, that a lorry (and I think this was in the morning around 5ish) that ends up in the central reservation is due to the driver falling asleep. Obviously that is just my guess.

Should the way tachos are used and monitored by more strict? The guy died :( so R.I.P who ever he may be.

Are they not strict now? I mean do tachos get looked at at the end of every journey or just if the police want to have a look at it?

Also caused by the truck having a blowout, i came about 1 foot from death when a 40 tonner came across 3 lanes punched through the central reservation and came straight for us.

Ahh, a blow out - the radio didn't let on to much through out the day.

I don't think they are strict now, yet I don't have much evidence as I only ever see my dads as he has his own removals business. He was checked reguarly when he first started out. I would imagine couriers with big fleets would go under regular checks?

All has a knock on effect on the a45 - not helped by someone's lambo catching fire just outside coventry and closing one side for 40mins.

When I drove past fire engine's still there - fire was out but the lambo was gutted, don't think anyone was hurt luckily.

Not a good day for midlands traffic.

Arg, I hate motorway accidents, witnessed one first hand earlier this year, lorry on the M1 misjudged a braking distance I think, swerved from the inside lane, cut across to the central reservation, hit it, dropped 5 ft onto the opposite side, hit a lorry on the inside lane on the other carriage. Cab completely ripped apart and smashed into the tarmac, driver didn't stand a chance, and shook me up for a good few days.

Just think about it:

A blow out in one of the front tires of a lorry travelling at 60mph weighing 30 tonnes. The wheels are so damn big a blow out drops the front on one side by about 20cm. So now you've got a damn heavy piece of machinery tilting and scraping the road on one side AND its lost half its steering ability. Its no wonder there are often such tragic consequences. :( Scary!

We hold the last 15 working days tachos at all times in the cab with the last working week being handed in every month for checking, cant see how checking tachos can prevent this sort of accidents working late shifts will always make anyone feel sleepy behind a wheel on a motorway in the dark with a constant humming from the engine. Had a couple of blow outs myself ive been lucky ive had them on the back so no loss of control, still scary tho.

With the new digital tacho card (looks like a chip n pin card) i dont think you could get much stricter, it can hold up to 365 days driving information (been told) on all hours for the week worked, if you go over a certain speed for more than a minute it will warn you by bleeping, if you dont slow down within a minute the bleeping will continue even if after the minute you slow down until you press a button confirming you know your speeding and you didnt slow down, basicaslly you incriminate yourself for not slowing down and all that can be used against you if the police need too. Im sure there more to the new tachos' but i only know bits feel sorry for the fella that got it this mornin thats motoring for ya, just cant stop some things from happening.

You may well be right, lorry drivers often fall asleep at the wheel :(

Could well be, firestar_3x said something about a blow out but I can't make out if he is talking about his experience or this accident.

Midlands traffic has been crap for months with A38 m6 junctions closed for a while, and then the works at junction 8 for the m5 only having 1 feeder land.

Twas about my experience :)

I've also had a truck tyre explode next to me on the motorway that was equally scary.

not suprised a lorry tyre is pressureised to well over 100psi, when they let go they have been know to blow out nearby shop windows, i have seen an image of a side of a panel van being ripped wide open by a lorry ytre letting go as well
