I've been looking at a new car for quite a while now and have spent the past few weekends looking and test driving. Originally had decided on an Accord i-cdti but a good low mileage version with a decent price doesn't seem to exist. They've all got a million miles or going for silly money so I went off them and started looking at Mondeo titanium tdci's but the missus hates Mondeos. She wants a Honda CR-V but I don't like 4x4 shopping trolleys.... and the battle has raged on!

Up until this weekend I'd been exclusively looking at diesels as I've had TDi's for years. This weekend I test drove the Mondeo ST220 and the Megane 225 Sport just for the hell of it... and the old petrol head in me has been awoken! :D

The ST220 is crazy thirsty and also £400+ to tax a year. The Megane has no boot (I need to fit 2 baby buggys + shopping in it) so not practical enough. Also we only spend about £30 a week on fuel so paying premium prices for a diesel car isn't really worth it?

Then it hit me, get a fast Accord! Always loved the V-TEC noise!! My target it to try and get a 55 plate Accord 2.4 Type S with under 60k miles and FSH for around £5k - £5.5k (private for cash) Sound realistic? Also anyone know of any common problems I should be looking out for?

You seem to have hit the common problem of restricting your choice to a specific mileage range.

You say crazy thirsty...the ST220 isn't that bad. I get 280-290 per tank, that's lots of short trips and two motorway trips a month.

Probably average about 25 mpg.

I remember lending a mates ST200 for a couple of weeks and that was unbelievable on juice... unless you pottered around like an old woman and even then it wasn't very good. Then I say what's the point in buying a sports car?

Lovely car to drive, they really are but the performance doesn't warrant the fuel it drinks or the tax band if you ask me.

Why does your other half hate mondeos?

If I read the OP right YOU are buying the car, not your wife:p.
Because they're about a bland as it gets? I don't like the regular mondeos much but they're an excellent all rounder if looking for value for money. Value was my mindset up until this weekend, now I've changed my mind :)

Seriously though WTF is that analogue clock about in the centre console?? and that Sony stereo! Hideous!

BUT I'm not buying a mondeo and don't want this thread to turn into a war zone so...

I think you need to do a little more homework because almost all ST220's are £245 a year to tax and not £400. Only the later 06, 56 and 07 plate ones are £400 to tax.

The Accord is more economical but thats a bit like saying a Honda Civic 1.8 is more economical than a Focus ST. Sure it is, but its also slower.

Yeah the one I was looking at was 2006 and the salesman said it was £400 tax which made me

As for performance I'm hoping the Accord and it's VTEC will feel swift enough after years of driving a 1.9 tdi.... will find out this weekend :)

Most of them are between 52 and 05 plate, though, and are therefore £245 to tax. Your budget wont get you anywhere near the high tax models.
The other half of the decision (who drives the car 5x times more than me) does not want a Mondeo, end of.

I don't want one enough to warrant the kind of mental torture it would take to either
A - Bomb her in submission with facts and figures
B - Plain old put my foot down :)

Anyone will know B usually comes with a heavy price!

Not feeling much love for the Honda...

So why even waste our time mentioning it? Seems a bit sily to bring up all that stuff about tax if its off the table irrespective because the rational person in your life says no. It'd have been as relevent to explain reasons why you didnt want a Veyron.

It isn't too bad on a run you will see 34mpg at a steady 70, I get on average 26mpg or so, and at the one's you're pricing up its only £245, only cars registered after 23 march 2006 would be in the next price band up.

Accord 2.4 Type-S.

My old man recently traded his in (for a new shape Accord 2.4...)

It was really practical (I can see 2 small prams/double buggy fitting), comfortable, decent interior/toys. Looks are of course subjective, I still think they look quite cool in terms of design.

It felt nice to drive, no type-r by any stretch, engine needed to be revved as with most Vtec cars to make proper progress, but its tractable enough at low speeds. Fuel consumption wasn't brilliant, probably better than an st220, but not miles better i'd wager.

The Type-S isnt as revvy as the other VTEC's, its DOHC but it only revs to 7K and the cam profile change is very late, I think its 6K to 7K RPM that its engaged so it does need its neck wringing but thats why you buy a VTEC

I really want a Type-S i've always liked them but cant justify the size of the engine and I dont need a four door saloon but the spec and the reliablity is immense for the money as the fuel consumption for the size of the engine, they are on a chain too and theres plenty of mods out there for them

They wont feel that fast because as with most sporty saloons they are very refined, it'll be a case of not relising how fast you are going, if you read the reviews they are well praised for out of the box handling and typical Honda style gear box

I'd have one over a Mondeo over and over again, even if the Mondeo is quicker

THAOC for more info

Dont be worried about mileage look for service history, correctly maintained VTEC engines do not break, im on my 3rd prelude atm and their H22 engines (from 1990) are good for at least 200k miles
