Accord Type-R - Tell me about them.

Problems include 5th gear synchro's on the 1st Gen's and general notchiness in the gearbox if not looked after and/or driven hard.

Regarding the gearbox think it was mainly the pre facelift that suffered from it,
5th and reverse synchro.

This car needs good tyres - and a stiff sidewall on the fronts to get the most out of it.

Hondas need bridgestones or something similar with stiff sidewalls

Seems like there is a bit of an echo in here :o

Back to the OP... what's a quote like on a CL1?

Could try a Civic VTi, insurance will be less than a Type-R I'd of thought

Just how often do you hit 130+ !???

Well is it true then? :p Possible on a track day

It's just something I swear I heard on a review as it wasn't ideal for Motorway cruising (so it counted against it compared to the ST24 and Vectra) so they changed it to be slightly longer.

Is it true it drops out of VTEC between 4th and 5th when pushing on?

3rd and 4th too unless you're right on the limiter, but that's 100 mph. Also, the gearboxes are made of chocolate, especially 5th/reverse, so if you're changing at high rpm into 5th, not only are you in jail time territory speeds, you're also more than likely be looking at a new selector fork and synchromesh if you do it often.

Regarding the track comment, I can't think of many track days in any Type R I've owned where I've been going more than 120mph often, 4th is very long in these cars.

If you get a prefacelift, just look after 5th and you should be free from 5th gear issues as long as the car doesn't already have one. Facelifts are better (though some early ones still have a pre box) but are not without their issues. You can normally tell signs of premature wear on it if reverse is a pain to select, so if you view one and it's like this, unless you're willing to pay in excess of £500 to sort it out, walk away.

All in all they are very capable cars and will give most other Type R's a run for their money, they are also comfortable and fantastic to drive.

If the OP or anyone here sees one, send me a link and I'll happily pass comment on it.

I had a DC2, got rid of it as I got fed up with it.

Think of the CH1 as a 4 door DC2 that's more comfortable yet just as quick albeit not as involving to drive. :)

Chris is the insurance more on the Accord, then your EP3 was? How does it compare on fuel consumption, handling, and performance? I'm in two minds of purchasing one as I really do like chucking my Yaris about, but it does lack that power I want.

Ive had a few lol

EP3 vs Atr . No contest its the accord all the way in every way . As to insurance I had a vti pre and post ATR owner and there more expensive to insure due to it being a hot hatch although 2 groups lower 15/17

Tyre wise I'm running AD08's , Never put a budget's on one of these it wont like it .

Insurance is cheaper for me. Both cars have pro's and con's.

Hahahahah biased or what.

K20A2 + 6 speed box urinates all over the H22A7 and chocolate 5 speed box.

I've hade 3 EP3's, 2 CH1's, a DC5 and a DC2 so I should know.

DC2 - best drivers car. Will kill you on the motorway.
EP3 - nice engine/gearbox, but dull steering feel, everyone wants to race you and there's around 4 million of them about. Finding a good one is hard now as they've mostly been trashed and not looked after.
CH1 - great all round car, looks dated, with a dated engine and gearbox made of chocolate, but fantastic to drive and can do long journeys well, it's also a bit of a sleeper except the rear wing and can surprise many cars with its pace. Again, finding a good one is hard work.

Just get a Prelude which is better then all of them :p :D

As the Prelude share's the same engine (Different revision) as the ATR, some of the common issues with them are 5th gear synchro as noted already. Rust and as I've owned 2 prelude's now, the rear caliper's seem to be a problem with them sticking/binding.

Looking around the 0-60 times between thetwo, the ATR is listed as 7.5 and the Prelude 6.9... I would've thought it would've been the other way round
