So, Celica GT Four is bye bye after being written off. I've been given a good pay out from insurnace company (still awaiting cheque) so looking for replacments.

I've had my fill of turbo nutter 4WD jap cars and fancy something a bit different. I loved my old Primera GT and a lot of people have said the Accord Type R is the faster, better handling and rawer brother of it. Plus insurance is surprisingly low compared to others.

So, who has one, what's it like, anything to watch out for, running costs etc.

Btw, I have between £4-£4.5k to spend.

That's sad news.

From my experience in an ATR the handling was excellent with decent power. Mixed driving MPG was mid 20's (like you'd care coming from a GT4) It just seemed an all round great car. Definately test drive a few as it will be different from the primera and very different from the GT4 in terms of handling and power delivery.

I have a mate with a 12 sec Integra type r turbo wants around 11.5k. was at usc did 12.4 in the wet

EDIT: Damn I really should read ALL of the post then I would realise its a little out of budget.

Im on my 2nd Accord Type-R. Owned the first for approx 2years then bought another when the first 1 was written off. Very underated cars ... infact a lot of ill informed people will think you're some Barry whos been down to halfords for a "Type R" badge and stuck it to the rear to make it look like a Civic Type R! Until you blitz past them on cam

Engines are very strong, however cambelt tensioner is slight cause of concern. There have been quite a few cases of the auto tensioner mechanism starting to fail which is usually indicated by a "diesel rattle" when revs drop between 3500rpm > idle. Eventually tensioner fails completely and belt will jump off. Cambelt is due every 72k, my first 1 had it replaced at 54k by previous owner after he noticed a rattle. a lot of owners replace the cambelt before 72k for peace of mind, whilst cambelt is off the auto tensioner, balancer belt and water pump are usually replaced too. Factor about £400 for all of this.

Another slight issue is the auto levelling HID headlights. They have levelling sensors fitted at on the underside rear of the car to detect and adjust the headlights height/aim. These sensors sometimes fail and cause the headlights aim to be "interesting" usually pointing down at the floor giving poor visibility. Approx £100 for the sensor iirc!

Then theres the gearbox sync issue ... i had my first Accord 2 years, it got "driven" every day. I never had issues with my gearbox. My 2nd Accord is the same, had it 5months and no issues yet (im on 100k miles, my first was on 97k before she was written off). However if it does affect your car expect to pay about £350 for parts and about another £400+ for labour. Not much change from £1000.

Gearbox issue is usually on present on Pre faclift cars (2000 and earlier) however there has been rare instances of 1 or 2 in the Post facelift cars, i expect this was Honda using up the last of the "defective" boxes before using the revised versions. But generally Post facelift cars are free from gearbox sync issues.

Pre facelift cars preferred fuel is 97RON or better as advised on the big yellow sticker behind the fuel cap but will run on 95RON. Pre styling is also more aggressive and have better (imo) looking front and rear bumpers aswell as erect polish exhaust tips.

Post cars have a slightly different map on the ECU whereby 95RON is the "preferred" fuel, they also have droppy, diesel looking exhaust pipes.

Anyway, i love mine. It takes a bit of time to get used to VTEC, sometimes you will find yourself being "beaten" by others in "lesser" cars because you're in the wrong gear After a few weeks driving though, you'll be a master. All of the Accord Type-R's use oil, so keep an eye on the level weekly (max). I have managed to drive like a saint for a whole tank of fuel and got 350miles out of it. My normal driving style sees 250miles and a huuugggeeeee grin!! I still grin when i look in rear view mirror and see the spoiler

O yeah AC and CAT 1 alarm were options, aswell as leather Recaros (SUPER RARE!). You dont see many without the alarm or AC though. In total of 2.5 years of ownership i havent had anything go wrong with mine. Its the best car ive ever owned. You definately do need to test drive one though, i know some ppl who have gone from turbo cars to VTEC and just cant live with it. Good luck!

Although i love my ATR, if you dont need 4 doors id be recomending a DC2 ITR for that budget as its a rawer animal! :D

DC2 was tempting, but for some reason was nearly twice the price of an ATR, thats at about 5 different insurance cos.

Yer thats one of the major reasons i plumped for the ATR, the insurance is VERY VERY reasonable to for type of car. ATRs arent as rar as an ITR, but are still excellent cars.

The guy is looking for 2 grand for it the mileage is 89000

Looks like a nice one, although it is red!! :p

One thing to bare in mind, with it being an 02 plate its gonna cost approx £400 a year to tax it, some people dont care but it is worth thinking about. Also cambelt is due at 72k so that should've been done so no nasty expensive cambelt service around the corner. However the ATR's are due service every 9k, with that car on 81k it might be due its next service imminently so might give you a slight bartering point. Looks nice though.

Thats either a typo, seller is on crack or the car has little no service history and/or is on the HPI register as crash repaired because that is WAAAY TOO CHEAP!!

If you want i could post the full ad but i am not sure if the rules allow.

hang on its got issues

Recently the water pump went and the car over heated and new head gasket followed, so its had a new head gasket, then the bottom end started to rattle or knock, so it had new big end bearings, then on the test drive the little end bearings went, and thats where its at right now. After spending around £2500 on getting the car right in the past month or so, it seems it still needs some work doing to it, but the car is mint bar this. My brother is fed up of it and has bought a Subaru Forester as he is a family man!!

Must read through ads and stop looking at pretty pictures.

Ouchy ... yer water pumps can be a bit of a pain. Folks on the ATR forums routinely recommend replacing the water pump at cambelt service time to save any future grief. For £2500 he could've bought a complete 2nd hand H22A7 engine and still had some change left over!

Those DC2's look good but you need to a/c for a few things

1. With more import tegs entering the UK its the ATR that is becoming more rare especially ones in good condition.

2. Also the 96/97 spec JDM tegs usually have no ABS and no SRS drivers airbag and insurnace will be group 20 as its JDM and not UKDM.

I still agree the DC2 is awesome but for £4k you will get more ATR than DC2.

Thanks for the Integras, but as i've already pointed out, insurance is astronomical for them, even the UKDM cars.
