PC in room A
Laptop in room B with Etherent, WiFi & Powerline Adapter connections.

I want to measure the comparative data transfer rates accurately. To do this, I have used a 2.2GB file and run the following batch script in batch mode:
time<NULL.txt>Speed.LOG
COPY \\RoomA\shared_test\TEST.FIL C:\_DATA\test.fil
time<NULL.txt>>Speed.LOG

I'm sure that there is a simpler, obvious way of doing this without going to CMD mode but I can't think of it. Can you suggest one?

Thanks for that. LanSpeedTest looks good :)

I downloaded the "free" version and with the laptop in the kitchen and the WiFi router and ZyXel 500Mbps PowerLine Adapter (PLA) in a room on the 1st floor, I get the following (average) results for reading:
WiFi = 23Mbps
PLA = 44Mbps
Both PLAs are connected through the same mains fuse box; I will have a go with a socket connected up via an "old" fuse box which I also have in my house and post results. I was NOT using encryption which I imagine would slow down throughput?

I did also try jperf and got nowhere with it and also something called NetStatLive which gave no results and I wasn't able quickly to work out how to configure it.

Again, thanks for all the suggestions.
