Acer Aspire 6930G - GPU query?

Hi all,

I am interested in buying the Acer Aspire 6930G however I am completely confused on the GPU specs. The model I viewed in store (can't say where obviously) stated that it has a 9600mGT with 1GB of memory (sticker on the product), it did not state whether this was GDDR2 or GDDR3 memory.

The acer website on the other hand states that the 6930 only comes with (at best as there are three models) a 9600mGT with 512mb DDR2 memory, there is no mention of a 1gb model.

My query is which is correct and what GPU does the laptop actually come with?

The model in question is the 6930G-744 (again this doesn't actually appear on Acers website?!)

Cheers.

If it's anything like the 8600m GT in my laptop, that chip can use system memory as well as its own dedicated memory - thus, the onboard GPU RAM is likely to be 512mb, but it can borrow another 512mb from the main memory when required.

Thats the thing though, it can do that as well (and states it can) yet in one case it states 1gb + turbocache and in the other case 512mb + turbocache (in both cases up to 17xxmb).

EDIT: Just done some further research which only aided in confusing myself further (:o) and according to a few people who actually bought this laptop it does indeed have a 1gb GPU (although none of them stated which type of memory). Again this goes against the Acer website.

To answer my own question the laptop does indeed have 1gb of dedicated memory (confirmed on the actual laptop). Although this brings another question, is the 1gb DDR2 or GDDR3?!

you got pics of that?

10 quid says it isnt a 1024mb graphics card but rather its smt like 512mb dedicated and the rest is shared....

and ohh look Acer agree with me...

]NVIDIA® GeForce® 9600M GT with up to 2303 MB of TurboCache™ (512 MB of dedicated DDR2 VRAM, up to 1791 MB of shared system
memory*), supporting NVIDIA® PureVideo™ HD technology, OpenEXR High Dynamic-Range (HDR) technology, Shader Model 4.0, Microsoft®
DirectX® 10<br> (* depending on size of system memory)

but well done you baited me into giving you the answer lol (instead of you doing the work) ahh well....

What are you on about?! :confused:

I actually went to look at the laptop (I can't take pictures as its only available in store - ocuk competitor). The properties tab per the drivers (under adaptor) specifically states 1024mb dedicted to the GPU (just like my 4850 states 512mb dedicated to the gpu) with up to 2xxx shared).

Seriously though I am not baiting you with anything, I had a genuine confusion over this specific model and its gpu (why did you think I was 'baiting you'?!). The model in question (note 6930g-744) does not exist on acers website and its spec is different. The quote you have used above is actually for the following three models:

* AS6930G-583G25Bn
* AS6930G-733G25Mn
* AS6930G-583G25Mn

I must admit its humurous that you think you done the work for me yet looked at the wrong models (despite me pointing out exactly 'the work you done for me' in my opening post).

Anyway given I found the answer out for myself I don't need this thread anymore.

reason i thought you were baiting because i posted the answer to both of your questions in another laptop thread which a very very simple search would have found

fair enough you might not have been.

heres where im getting my info from

http://www.acer.co.uk/acer/wr-resource/1653501821/upload/pent1/1/Notebooks%20Consumer.pdf

both of the 6930G models DDR2 and not 1gig dedicated.

but like you said the model your looking at is not one of the acer specs so could be slightly different

bizarrely enough you did put the correct information in your original post and i cannot think for the life of me why i responded as i did...i honestly didnt see that model information and such...... as your right i would have seen it was not one that is on the acer site.

sorry about that gl with the purchase.
