Hi guys i cant decide which way to go acer revo asrock 330 or htpc. i was building htpc until i notice the motherboard they sent me was wrong one so thats going back.
so now i have a choice but which way do i go ?

Presumably you won't be using it for recording since you are looking at a Revo. I use XBMC and it has a lovely interface - it runs great on a Revo.

However there are other options on the market now such as the cyclone mkv for cheaper than half the price of the options above. Doesn't look too bad, decent remote control and does the job just fine.

Yes thats what i want to use xbmc with all the covers onscreen make it look nice but more importantly its play perfectly any hd content.

Hi,

I'm thinking of getting one of these next week

Any chance of some photos of it (external and internal)

Does S3 sleep mode work correctly on it?

For the money you really can't complain, a few minor issues you should be aware of.

GFX memory allocation can not be changed in the BIOS, and is dependant on your system ram (1gig=128mb, 2gig=256mb, 4gig=512mb). As long as you have 2gig of ram 1080p will be fine.
It's a massive pain in the butt to get the lid off.
It can be very noisy if the CPU is being worked hard. Long term I think I'll either remove the lid or cut it and put a fan grill in.
No fan control available in the BIOS.

S3 works fine from both Windows 7 and XBMC live, USB wakeup works once enabled in the BIOS.

Depending on what you have lying around (laptop ram/hard disk) you might find it cheaper to go for the Revo 3610 linux edition which comes with 2gig ram and a 250gb hard disk for £200.

Any chance of some pics of the internals of the unit?

Whats the build quality like?

I like the size of the unit, but reviews about the noisy fan are putting me off.

Whoops, sorry for not getting back to you, don't often come in here!

The fan on mine is as close to silent as I could wish for to be honest, certainly more than quiet enough for HTPC usage.

Build quality is pretty good for the price, obviously it's a plastic case but it all fits together nicely with no gaps or bulging panels etc. I would have prefered one in black, but it looks pretty classy in white. One nice touch is the stand that comes with it has two slots. One is just wide enough to fit the PC in, and if you rotate it 90 degrees the wider slot lets you stack a slimline DVD drive next to it as well.

Another nice touch is the rubber feet which are attached by small, but very strong magnets so they are easy to attach/remove if you want to change from horizontal to vertical mounting.

I use it pretty much all the time now if I just want to do a bit of web browsing or a bit of Word/Excel use. In standby it takes hardly any power (less than 1 watt) so I can be up and running XP in seconds.

the bolded bit above is not true. 2 gig will give you 512MB Ram to the GPU in Bios settings. There is pleanty of people who can testify with their guides on the net. I've just ordered an additional 1 gig RAM, only because the Killa Sample was slighly jittery. Hopefully, the extra ram will make it run smoothly.

Have a look at the Foxconn nT330i. Can be had for as little as £140 as a barebones, and is a very nice bit of kit (using mine right now).

Me want.. I have two Revo 3610s but thats nice.. the audio is good for OSX hackintosh but what brand is the gigabit LAN (Realtek PLEASE!!) and are they available in UK (as I didnt find them when I looked) :(
