Achievements

Yes, just yesterday - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12691062&postcount=174
Disclaimer, i'm talking about these achievement you get on things like xbox....maybe some other platforms too where they give NOTHING! and are given out like free candy

I honestly don't get some gamer in this thread, adds longevity in a game? Bahahaha *milk out nose* What? Seriously? A pop on on a screen saying Yay!!!!!!, you managed to walk through a tunnel that everyone has to in the game, but hey... let's make you special and get a little text pop up, gleeeeeee.

I think you need to be a unique kind of special to really think achivements which;

1: Don't actually add anything to the game except the form of text on screen.
2: Are not really achievements, have you seen some of the things they consider achivements? YOU KILLED 100 [insert npc] here, but this game has thousands you will kill in the game to completion and you were going to do it anyway, but hey kid... you're special!

I would consider an achievement to head shot 3 people with one bullet whilst doing a backflip off a cliff on fire, blind. (Over exageration don't go crazy keyboard warriors)

There are games which have definate benefit, TF2 (although I stopped once achievments came out, ruined a pick up and play and turned it into grindfest and pretty much a game where I think more about myself and unlocking things to keep up rather than team play.

WAR online is alright, it has a mix of reward based, silly and pointless ones.
Click yourself 100,5000, 5,000,000 times? I think I read it was 5million somewhere and I saw someone with it, can you say click.exe? But hey, at least it's free xp and ingame titles! ^_^

As you can see, I hate the achievements which don't do anything, I think they are made for the kids where competitive sports are not allowed and nobody is a loser, but a winner!

Calm down!

I like achievements, I don't make a point of going out of my way to get them but if I am bored I do enjoy going after some of the more challenging ones.

i got to elite in rainbow six vegas on my 360 just from playing the game loads

i really enjoyed the online section of the game and spent over 6 months playing it

the achievement for reaching elite was 40 points iirc

not balanced compared to other games where you get 40 points for pressing start or something daft

way i see it is that achievements are ok - but not balanced
they were ok for a bit and a nice little bonus

fact of the matter is - i sold my 360 and kept my ps3

the ps3 acheivement system seems a little more balanced - and in some cases a lot more challenging in general than the xbox achievement system

i do like that similar initiatives are being brought to the PC
but luckily the PC has no standardised system - so there are no points [bar GFW live]
but having no points and making achievements linked to unlockables makes the game a lot more fun for the player rather than accumilating some internet number that has no real value and is not a measure of skill

if i wanted to grind - i would play warcraft - but i think the PC achievements that valve have implemented have given players goals to look forward to

for instance
medics on tf2 given the incentive to heal - the majority of tf2 cheevo's give the player tasks to do that make you play as that class in the way valve inteded the class to be played

this is a stark contrast to the silly stuff i have seen on xbox live where developers decide to put silly multiplayer achievements in that cause people to play selfishly/do stupid tasks that ruin the game for other players

I like the achievements in TF2,

If you get a certain number for 1 character you unlock a new weapon for them, and the more achievements you get the more you unlock,

TF2 is one of the few games on the PC where I can stand them. Even then though most people just hop on an acheivement server and get them all completed in ~10 minutes.

In general though, I like having to unlock things in games - It gives a sense of achievement. However, achievements for achievements sake (or 'gamerscore') just seems like a huge amount of willy waving crap.

Some of TF2's achievements are daft too. The "uber a scout whilst he pans 3 people with a baseball bat" one is a great example :D.

It fits with TF2 though, it is a silly game... I always have a giggle when I see a scout run into a heavy with his baseball bat out. BOINK!

I was playing for ages yesterday as a pyro, some of the achievements for that are crazy bonkers, but the came as I was playing. Baptism of Fire and Burns Ward are just a couple I remember.

Pyros are fun! I want the new weapon!

ive been working on my pyro achievements the past few days, for the weapons.

Had amazing fun! The flare gun rocks :D Cant do some of them though, so I might move onto heavy.

I'm so glad im doing it properly though, rather than going on achievement servers :/

Coincidentally, I got Pyromancer on Tuesday - 1,000,000 burny burny points :p

Just played normally and got to it eventually. I'm glad they listened with the latest achievements and made them more realistic to get in actual game play.

I live for achievements. Achievements even make rubbish games fun. Saying that I'll still play great games if they don't have achievements. That's why I'm playing through Deus Ex again. To me it's one of my all time favourite games.

AVATAR!!!! 1000 points for like 2 mins gameplay

Good effort, playing as a Pyro is great fun, though I'm still miles away from 1M

you kill the enemy, with a taunt.

the pyro does a hadooooken (ball of fire) which one hit kills. (does like 400 dmg)
