Achieving higher FPS

I want to run 60fps @ 4K and 100fps @ 1440p 21:9 with whatever GPU nvidia are going to bring out and currently have an i5 8400, do I need to upgrade to an i7 8700k to reach these frames? Or are there other reasons I need to change to i7 8700k, or is that pointless and the i5 is good enough?

Why not wait until you have the card and see if it's bottlenecking? Also no-one can really say when there are no reviews or benchmarks of unreleased products.

True, but would you saying using a 1080ti now could achieve a constant 100+ FPS on a 21:9 1440p display? Cos I was going to buy the 8700k but now I’m thinking it isn’t needed

At that res the CPU doesn't matter too much. You'll be fine with the i5.

100fps is doable depending on the game and settings used, example Fortnite will with all settings maxed will but The Witcher 3 will be closer to 40-50fps.

So I’ve never even gone above 60fps before so I have no idea how noticeable the jumps would be but I would prefer to be confident most, if not all games will run at the 100 area. I don’t mind paying the extra since I can sell my i5, but would you say the 8700k would be worth getting in my situation?

If your CPU can run your current resolution at 100fps then it will run 1440 21:9 at 100fps.

Your GPU on the other hand, that's never going to run 4k 100fps unless you turn the settings down (and defeat the purpose of 4k in the first place).

Actually, what is your current system spec?

No point mentioning what I have now cos it CANNOT cut it, but I intend a GTX 1180/2080, i5 8400 (or upgrade to i7 8700k/9700k depending on release times) and 16gb 3200mhz DDR4

You mustn't have the cards in your signature ? Or you have more money than sence?

He appears to be on the wind up and heading for a 50 post/day average... but you never know, maybe some photos of his current set-up could convince us he's not trolling?

Just a gentleman with loadsamoney and looking to learn new things here.

Cheers

9-7980XE @ 4.4 GHz
128 GB DDR4 RAM
Titan V SLI
2TB M.2 PCIe NVMe

Anything I could upgrade? Got that itch that needs scratching.

Thanks for the details, the LS50 looks like my next purchase.

Yeah the red thing is a beaut isn't she fella? Too bad it's only a two seater though.

I have an 8700K, 1080Ti and play at 2560x1440 and have recently tickled my 8700K up to 4.7Ghz.
It comfortably plays PUBG and it is locked at 144fps most of the time with occasional drops at 130fps.

I don’t think it managed quite that before I overclocked it.

Maybe look at graphics card first before CPU?

You're saying that you've got a much more powerful CPU and it can struggle with higher FPS... so he should think about upgrading his GPU?

No not at all.

I was giving an example of what my system which is a slightly better cpu with a decent god can achieve.
It certainly doesn’t struggle and more than meets his specification.

My advice is go for GPU first and see if it performs how he needs it to and then CPU if it doesn’t.

All he has to do is test whether his current setup can achieve the desired higher FPS at lower resolutions (e.g. 1080p - low settings). There's no need to buy an expensive GPU to experiment with.

Thanks everyone for the responses, it does seem clear now that I should get the GTX 1180/2080 (which should be what I need graphically) and see if that keeps up with the frames ok. As for lowering the graphics to check if my current cpu is good enough, I know in gta etc I can go well into the hundreds, just Need to see if that holds up when the new Nvidia card is released, as normally 100fps shouldn’t be hard at all for an 8th gen chip

The latest Frostbite engine games are extremely heavy on your CPU, I cant give you advice on those resolutions as im only using 1080p but i like to keep my FPS @ 120fps or above and see around 90% usage in some 64p conquest maps on my 5820K @ 4.2ghz.

I reckon you'll be close to maxing that CPU out in some scenarios, maybe not so much in 4k but def in 1440p with the higher fps
