Achieving higher FPS

Lowering settings will lower CPU load. You have to test at miserable resolutions [say 720p], but always max settings [except msaa obv], in order to find your real CPU performance.

The latest Frostbite engine games are extremely heavy on your CPU, I cant give you advice on those resolutions as im only using 1080p but i like to keep my FPS @ 120fps or above and see around 90% usage in some 64p conquest maps on my 5820K @ 4.2ghz.

I reckon you'll be close to maxing that CPU out in some scenarios, maybe not so much in 4k but def in 1440p with the higher fps
Agreed.

Conventional wisdom on enthusiast forums is that at higher resolutions CPU doesn’t matter so much if at all, it’s all about the GPU they say...

But I get the feeling folks who offer this advice are thinking of single player games... OP I can tell you now if you’re into MULTIPLAYER games like Battlefield, hectic 64 player matches can and will tax your CPU!!

I have literally thousands of hours in Battlefield and when things get chaotic I see my CPU reach it’s limit, I know I’m not on my own because others on this forum have experienced the same thing.

So please consider what type of games you’re looking to play before you purchase anything, if you’re into SP games fine..a lesser cpu will be ideal. Me I am more excited about grabbing an 8 core i9 cpu/platform than I am a new GPU upgrade.

It's gonna be interesting having to remember that i5s arent 4 cores anymore.

The i5 8400 is 6 cores 6 threads, so won't be an issue in gaming at all.

Getting high fps at high resolutions is going to be GPU dependent, and of course dependent on the game and the settings used.
