OK I just installed my new samsung 500gb hardrive - replacing the original 160gb maxtor. I used the trial version of acronis true image home 2009 to clone the disk and it worked - so my whole original system is now on my new drive, which I'm currently using :D hurrah

anyway, before I did that, I backed up as recommended - it did a complete backup of the disk.

the thing is, that backup is 60gb, which seems big to me considering my original hdd was only about 80gb full to begin with. After it did this back up it went to 140gb full!! (out of 160).

here is a pic of it (called mybackup.tib)

Now, the reality is that I'm not going to purchase acronis, since I don't do stuff like this much. So, can I just delete that .tib backup? It can't be opened with anything else, so I can't see its worth keeping?

rofl, yeah delete it unless you want to restore an image from it again, maybe you would like to back it up onto another HDD (the old one?) up to you but i would delete it.

It is of no use if you don't want to use the program again. You'd have to buy Acronis for it to restore. If, however your pc does go fubar, you can always buy acronis then and restore that image.

Up to you mate.

things to do before acronis..

run ccleaner (removes temp files)
disable system restore (lots of GB stored here)
move any media files (videos, music, pictures) to another partition, they don't compress well at all

Get rid of it - it was only ever a precaution against the image not working on the new disk, and since you've confirmed that is running ok there's really no point in keeping it. But even tho you now have your new disk running etc it would be worth using some free image backup tool (like the one recommended by JC) and putting backups onto the olg 160Gb drive.
