Been given a free Genuine copy of Acronis True Image Home 2011 & was wondering if it is any good.

I am thinking of updating my SSD firmware as it has had quite a few new releases & I am still on the original 1.

Can I backup the whole drive comtents inc o/s updates programmes e-mail ect

Yes it's fine. But if you're on Win7 you don't need to use such software to do this as Win7 has an equal, Backup to a System Image and Windows will save a VHD image with reference files on to your backup drive, this can be mounted and browsed later or archived or used to restore your entire drive to that state again later if something goes bottoms wagging.

This. Also Macrium Reflect free edition is very highly regarded.

I don't like backup SW - period. I'd rather just drag and drop my documents onto my NAS drive and rebuild the machine and applications and drag the data back. I just don't trust the backup SW - any issues with it and your precious memories are toast.

My 2 penneth...

I always backup my music/video/photos on seperate drives, learnt my lesson from that years ago when a hdd died and took all me data with it.

It is just that the SSD cannot be the os drive when updating the firmware through the windows update interface & it takes so long to re-install all the updates & various software I was thinking it may be easier to use the backup software

Acronis True Image on a bootable CD is extremely good for backing up PC's over a network. Use it all the time to back up PC's before repairs.

Both Acronis and Windows Backup have their uses.

I use Windows backup for normal backups and Acronis for imaging/restoring disks.

Windows System Image Backups are unique in that it creates a VHD, I don't know if many people understand what this means but you can browse the contents as a drive from any PC so your data is always there or you can move it to another location like a NAS or whatever. Restoring it restores the drive that it was created from 1:1.

Whether you like backup software or not, it's not exactly hard to check if a backup completed properly and with System Images it serves several functions all in one. It is the most logical way to back up. To back up my 60 odd GB of SSD data it takes about 30mins so it's also a fast affair.

What SSD do you have? My Corsair updates just fine via windows as the OS drive. Corsair recommend it anyway.

I'm also interested in getting Acronis Ture Image 2012 but wondering if it's worth it. I have an SSD as my W7 OS drive and I like to do a full format and reinstall about twice per year but just dont have time anymore (usually takes 1/2 - 1 day to reinstall all programs and download updates) so I'm wondering if I should get Acronis or if the built in Windows backup will be sufficient? Basically I want to do one fresh install soon and then fully install and update all programs, save a backup in that fresh clean state so I can simply format and install the backup as often as I notice the SSD slowing down (should take 30-60 mins right?).

Secondly, would Acronis or Win 7 backup be best for keeping a copy of my 1TB media drive (to 1TB external) up to date? I've been using drag and drop until now but last time i did that was about 3 months ago...

Hate it, messes with windows, like blanking out its own [windows] backup even after unistalling it, then it wont reinstall etc etc, had no end of trouble with it before. Wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

This is just what I want to do.

Every time I try a image back up with w7 it says cannot do image backup's on any of my internal drives? will install this later tonight & try it.
