Hi

My hard drive decided to die but is useable as slave to get documents of.

I am trying to get the activation key of so I can re-install on new drive.

How do I find out the windows 7 key as it is sitting in an external docking station.

I tried free prgrams like key finder etc, but they all look at the machine I am on not the hard drive in the docking station.

cheers

There should be a sticker on you case which has the code on it. If you're using a laptop check under the battery.

Google it, there are literally hundreds of programs out there...

The vast majority of which will inspect the registry of the booted operating system, which doesn't help him much if he can only access the OS he's interested in as a slave drive on another machine.

The key is stored in the registry but is encrypted/obfuscated. Short of finding out where it's stored and how the obfuscation works, I'm not sure how you'll get at it tbh.

There is a means of extracticting Vista/7 product keys from the hash files but I doubt it's allowed here. Besides if you don't have a coa sticker it's likely a counterfeit anyway.

The first few I looked at could be pointed at other drives...it's all in the search terms! I'm not trying to be harsh, but without having to do this myself I'd just be searching for him, and I'm guessing most people would be the same...

if its not been said already magic jelly bean is the program you want it will let you point at a registry file and pull the keys from it (at least I'm sure I have dont it in the past)

By the way after recently upgrading my pc i was prompted to re-activate my win 7 again. I used my product key on which a message came up saying it is a default key and that i need to use a different key.

I do remember having this problem about a year ago after installing a new GPU and to resolve the situation i called MS customer services and after a few minutes of telling them im not a pirate or using a pirated software they gave me a new key.

I will be calling them soon again. Still have another 27 days.

Apparently the windows i have, have 3 activations after which you need a new key.

You shouldn't need a new key! And MS didn't give you a new one either. Sounds like they gave you a new activation code [different from Product Key] since your hardware changed.

If you have a Retail version then you can activate as often as you like. You just may need to do it over the phone. If OEM, you shouldn't need to reactivate at all unless reinstalling on the same machine.

Well i just wasted an hour on the phone and then half hour on the MS assist easy on the pc. The guy made me to do scans of my dvd, certificate of authenticity and product key and then had me send it over to him. Complete waste. Now i have to wait. How hard is it to get my windows activated again?

Probably send me an email saying oh yes your key is invalid. Which i told him to begin with!!!/ Argh.
