ActiveX crashing IE - other browsers also

Bought a second hand alienware off a mate at the weekend, worked perfectly when i played with it. I decided i wanted it so we reformatted it.

Now when a website causes an ActiveX popdown, IE crashes and i get an alienware error report or if i disable that I get the iexplore.exe - Application error - instruction at "0x07cd0068" .... couldn't be written.

Reformatted again last night and it seemed fine, activeX didnt cause a crash but now when i've got home it does. Only difference is some windows updates.

Tried Firefox and it doesnt work either, though it doesnt crash nothing happens.

Any ideas?

Only IE runs ActiveX, so Firefox wouldn't do anything with it.

The situation was basically that I couldn't get new gfx drivers off nvidia.com as IE freaked out and any other browser did nothing. FF seems to work okay now, at least so far but any instance of ActiveX on IE and it freaks out. Any ideas? I'd really prefer to fix this as my foreign uni uses it

version of IE? got all windows updates? iirc there was an ActiveX exploit not too long ago.
