Activision Allows COD: Black Ops Dedicated Servers but There’s a Catch

we knew this other day :p you can only have dedis off gameservers .com

if your a clan it matters if your a general gamer means nothing really

"GAMESERVERS.COM SELECTED AS THE EXCLUSIVE DEDICATED SERVER PROVIDER FOR CALL OF DUTY : BLACK OPS"

Says exclusive.

Doesn't mean the only GSP ever. :S
Smoke without fire, but meh not interested in bad(in my opinion, no matter how that opinion is formed) games. :>

Exclusive means it's the only one :p

Going to be horribly oversold and I'm going to bet they stick a few extra on each box and take an extra few percent profit over buying more boxes.

means no mods....

wonder why halflife engine was so popular with the gaming community, wonder why valve got so succesful , wonder why valve welcomes modders , wonder why steam is so succesful.

wonder why activsion will one day die a horrible glorious death

No they won't.

Activision's success makes valves look pretty tame.

They've managed to tap the huge "casual" market with the new direction of the cod series, and made a huge amount of money on it.

There's no where near as much money in a long and lovingly developed games that's beloved by the traditional gamer crowd, when you can turn out a slightly modified version of last years game and make four times the number of sales at twice the price.

no big gaming companies ever went bust? i can think of loads even casual gamers arent stupid , if activision carry on restricting everything , pumping out the same game with a different theme people will get tired of it

Activision is one of (if not the) oldest and biggest publisher there is.

They also have a big deal with Microsoft atm and own blizzard so they arn't going anywhere for a long long time.

pumping out the same game with a different theme people will get tired of it

Then they'll move onto one of their other massive franchise names for a while.

This was mentioned in the "Reveal" thread:

Maybe the exclusivity will only be for the games launch and will open up after the initial launch? Either way, I personally dont care about this franchise anyway.

Bobby Kottick is a **** though, whoever signed this off is a **** too.

Why are they soo against normal, open dedi server support?

Paid for DLC, that is what.

Am looking forward to the devs squirming when answering questions on this one.

A mere 3% of Modern Warfare 2's UK sales were the PC version, I'd say that was a fairly clear message...unfortunately the UK is only a modest portion of the entire market for the game.

how many casual gamers play any mods?

er pretty much none of them. the modding community is so small, and the non modding community so large for COD that i dont think it makes any difference.

with all the blame on Kotick. What a great day

This is as messed up as the BC2 dedicated server support was. Sure, it doesn't affect most of you but for us living in countries gameservers.com has no support for, it means the closest servers to us are thousands of miles away. 50ms latency is not what I expect from dedicated servers but it is what I'm going to get as that's the closest server to my location. The same problem was true with BC2 as EA didn't give a single Finnish provider access to BC2 server files.

In my books, this game has no dedicated server support and neither does BC2.

To think, Epic actually gave away the UT2004 dedicated server package for free, not to mention cross platform support and built in options for modding\mutators. How times change...
