Hi there,

right so i bought a p6t6 motherboard so i could have raid 0 sas for OS and then 2x raid 5 sata arrays but ohhh no, turns out you cant have sas and sata raid running at same time, turing on sata turns off sas. Lame :(

so im looking into raid cards and have come accross these 2

3ware 9650SE-8LPML
adaptec 5805

Any thoughts on these 2 cards? will either of them run ok on my x58 board?

Its going to be used for gaming and some video editing and other work related stuff.

Are there any other suggestions?

Many thanks

Any idea if it will work on in my motherboard? ive seen that some people are having issues, but not sure if thats down to them plugging it into a 1x slot or not.

Also, can you upgrade the ram on these? i hae a 1gb stick of ddr2 ECC registeres stuff out of a server.

And any idea what the difference between a perc 5 and 6 are? and the i and e models?

I have mine plugged into a x1 slot :p
Problem of having two graphics cards installed on P5Q Pro :/ only using it for RAID 5 though and speed isn't an issue for me.

Problems stem from something to do with nVIDIA/Intel chipsets or some such thing. Simple fix (which I had to use) is to cover up a couple of the pins on the card, I used insulating tape. The pins are something to do with sensor readings. Anyway, it's pretty much a non-issue; just something to be aware of if it doesn't boot with it installed.

You can indeed upgrade the RAM, as long as you've got the right sort of course. Currently away from my main computer so can't check which it is.. but unless you're willing to run the risk of data corruption (and array failure) in the event of an unexpected shutdown, you'll have to make sure you get one with a battery backup unit (BBU), or disable the cache, which will of course render any RAM in there useless :p

The PERC 6/i supports RAID 6 in addition to what the PERC 5/i supports. There are other differences too but I can't remember them at the moment. Didn't even know there were 'e' models?..

One thing of note with the PERC 5/i is the heatsink provided for it is a bit naff and you really have to either cool it actively (which I did, I did a Blue Peter job of dangling an 80mm fan from my CPU heatsink using a shoelace :p) or upgrade the heatsink, otherwise it reaches a fairly lofty temperature - something over 100**°C!

Get the 5805, have been running one for over a year now using RAID 5 and WD750GB RE drives. It packs a punch, get the BBU aswell with it.

ok, so i got me a perc 5i for nice and cheap :D

plugged it in it comes up detects drive WOOP worked, then....

no sas boot rom :( whaaaa

ok with the perc 5i installed, i cant use the onboard sas again :\

any ideas why i can have 2 raid boot roms?

I don't remember exactly why but when I was going for a raid card after a long research I concluded that 3ware was much better than Adaptec.

So I got a 3ware, while I ran my storage box, I was very happy.
