Adaptive Sync Question

Hi there - total noob question, but I’m looking at this monitor:

Is this going to work with G-Sync? I had thought all of these technologies were interchangeable but this review suggests that it’s not gsync compatible… what’s the deal?

The maximum refresh rate is 160 Hz, both via DisplayPort and HDMI. The monitor supports AMD’s FreeSync Premium adaptive frequency technology, but unfortunately, the MPG 274URF QD is not compatible with NVIDIA G-SYNC.

Thanks!

I've been confused myself with this, I think the difference is in the range that it operates in, "Compatible" is pretty much the same as FREESYNC NON premium, 20-144hz I believe, whereas G SYNC PRO uses a hardware module and has an extended range, FREESYNC PREMIUM also has an extended range. In your case I THINK it may operate to an extent under A-SYNC but I've heard Nvidia can be fussier than AMD so I'd tread very carefully. Going forward, I read that Nvidia is going into partnership with VIA to integrate a G-SYNC module into all their scaler chips, this would massively increase the amount of proper G-SYNC monitors available (as VIA is huge in that arena), not just G-SYNC "compatible". There seems to be a real drought of proper G-SYNC monitors at the moment, a real shame because the proper one I had was excellent.

Thanks @Arcane - from looking at videos such as that below, I’m pretty sure it will work but I’ll report back when it arrives.

From what I gather, this used to be a problem back in the day, but they all work now. There’s probably a bleed of repeated misinformation on the topic that confuses people.

Nice, be interested to see how you get on, I'm putting together a new PC now and got pretty much everything bar the GPU and Monitor, I've managed to twist myself out of shape, going round in circles as to what to get. :D

Haha know the feeling - will let you know!

This is my productivity / gaming monitor whilst I wait for the 27” 4k OLEDs… I think I’d just find a 1440p OLED a bit annoying if I’m using a 4k monitor for work.

If you’re getting a 50 series card early next year, then I think you might as go 4k. The question is whether you can stomach 32” or not… it’s too big for me personally.
